BAXTER, Richard (Dick)
May 6, 1932 – January 17, 2024

With deep admiration for a life well lived, it is with great sadness that we share the passing of Richard (Dick) Baxter, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and godfather on January 17, 2024 at the age of 91, at the Hospice of Glengarda in Saskatoon.

Dick is survived by his wife, Mary (neé Vinish) of Saskatoon, son Garth (Lisa) Baxter and granddaughters Brianna, Kaylee and Megan of Newmarket, ON; son, Gary (Joanne) Baxter of Manotick, ON; brother, Lyle (Caroline) Baxter of Belleville, ON; and sisters-in-law; Lillian Tweet of Hanley, SK, and Vi Baxter of Trenton, ON.

He is lovingly remembered by Mary’s children, Lyle Vinish of Saskatoon, SK, Lorne (Brenda) Vinish of Saskatoon, SK, Lloyd (Alyson) Vinish of Kelowna, BC, and Suzanne (Brent) Keen of Turtleford, SK, and their families; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from his large and extended family.

Dick was born in Regina, SK and raised in Pense, SK. He attended high school at Balfour Tech in Regina, earned his degree in psychiatric nursing from Saskatchewan Training School (STS) in Weyburn, SK in 1953, and a Master of Social Work from University of Manitoba in 1962.

It was while training at STS that he met Donnee Tweet. They married on September 30, 1953 at Kenaston, SK, embarking on an incredible journey of 49 years together, raising 2 sons, embracing 2 daughters-in-laws, and 3 grandchildren. In 2001, their journey came to an end when Donnee sadly passed away.

In May 2002, Dad married Mary Vinish. For more than 21 years, they shared new adventures and travels with their journey taking them on Good Sam camping trips, ocean cruises, family visits and so much more.

The family extends their deep gratitude to the doctors, nurses and caregivers at Royal University Hospital, City Hospital, SHA Client Patient Access Services (Home Care) and most recently St. Paul’s Hospital and the Hospice at Glengarda. They are truly angels on earth.

There will be a viewing at Hillcrest Funeral Home on Sunday, January 21, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are all welcome. A Celebration of Life will take place in Saskatoon in early May with notification to follow.

In lieu of tributes, donations may be made to Wa Wa Shriners Patient Transportation Fund or Shriners Hospitals for Children - Canada. Condolences for the family may be left by visiting www.hillcrestmemorial.ca
