ST JOHN'S -- Saskatchewan will be playing for a pair of medals on the final day of Week 1 at the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
The men's baseball team will face Prince Edward Island for bronze, while Saskatoon’s Erika Markentin and White City’s Alexa Smith will face Quebec in the women's beach volleyball semifinal and will play for a medal later in the day.
Saskatchewan remains in eighth place in the medal standings with one gold and one bronze.

Men’s Baseball
Saskatchewan’s quest for a gold medal came to an end with a 9-4 loss to Quebec, but they’ll still have a chance to land on the podium on Saturday as they face Prince Edward Island for bronze.
Team Sask took a 3-2 lead out of the first inning, but Quebec put up three of their own in the second and added another three in the fourth for an 8-3 lead. The teams would exchange runs the next two innings and that’s how things finished up.
Hanley’s Rhett Anderson went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead Saskatchewan’s offence, Saskatoon’s Trentin Kooy and Reid Olfert also had a pair of hits each.
Watrous’ Pryor Dyck started for Team Sask and allowed five runs on six hits over the first two innings, Saskatoon’s Keaton Lejan surrendered three runs on five hits over the next 1 ⅓. Aberdeen’s Kash Berg allowed a run on three hits over the final three innings.
Men’s Basketball
Team Sask dropped a 95-66 decision to Nova Scotia and will now face New Brunswick for seventh-eighth place on Saturday.
Saskatchewan got off to a good start and took a 20-17 lead of the first quarter and would lead 43-41 at the half. Nova Scotia would outscore Sask 28-14 in the third quarter before pulling away even more in the final 15 minutes.
Saskatoon’s Raph Mutongolo led Saskatchewan with 13 points while North Battleford’s Nate Fransoo scored 12 and Martensville’s Jakob Jungwirth added 10.
Women’s Basketball
Saskatchewan defeated Prince Edward Island 70-44 and will take on Quebec in the fifth-sixth place game on Saturday.
A 15-8 lead in the first quarter got Sask off to a good start and they’d lead 34-22 at the half before continuing to pull away after the break.
Saskatoon’s Ryan Deutscher was Team Sask’s top scorer with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Regina’s Hayden Kot scored 13 and Regina’s Nicola Meban had 12.
Women’s Lacrosse
Saskatchewan finishes in seventh place thanks to a 4-0 win over New Brunswick in their placement game.
Weyburn’s Ella Schenher scored the lone goal of the first period to give Team Sask a 1-0 lead before Regina’s Amy Teichler and Wakaw’s Marti Burechailo added single markers in the second. Schenher closed out scoring with the only goal in the third period.
Carry The Kettle’s Keariah O’Watch earned the rare lacrosse shutout in goal.
Sailing
Wynyard’s Daniel Laverty sits in sixth place with 37 points in the Men’s Single Handed ILCA, having finished with 12 in Race 6 and five in Race 7. Placings for Race 8 were unavailable as of this writing. Competitors will have two races for the medals on Saturday.
Saskatoon’s Elly Vardeh-Esakian picked up 10 points in both her Women’s Single Handed ILCA races on Friday and sits in ninth place.
Men’s Soccer
Saskatchewan took a 5-1 win over Manitoba in their placement game to finish in ninth place.
Team Sask got off to a great start, with Saskatoon’s Zach Kim scoring in the fifth minute, 21st minute and 26th minute for a natural hat trick and early 3-0 lead. Swift Current’s Griffin Striker made it 4-0 at the 30th minute, and Saskatchewan would have a comfortable lead at half.
Saskatoon’s Coen Laclare scored their only second half goal in the 69th minute.
Saskatoon’s Landon Bagonluri picked up the win in goal.
Swimming
Men’s 3,000 metres open water: Regina’s Owen Eisler (39:34.52) finished in seventh place, five minutes off the podium. Saskatoon’s Landon Kennedy (42:41.04) finished in 16th place.
Women’s 3,000 metres open water: Regina’s Macy Harlos (42:24.51) finished 12th, Prince Albert’s Clara Gelhorn (44:50.98) finished 13th.
Tennis
Saskatchewan defeated Manitoba 4-2 and will face Nova Scotia in the fifth-place match on Saturday.
Men’s Singles: Regina’s Ethan Guo defeated Jeff Nguyen 6-2, 6-1 and Regina’s Arya Guha defeated Jacob Yee 6-1, 6-1.
Women’s Singles: Regina’s Karina Berska defeated Natalina Zappia 6-1, 6-2 and Regina’s Isabella Yan defeated Ashley Schneider 6-0, 6-0.
Men’s Doubles: Regina’s Kaiden Gui and Regina’s Michael Liu lost 6-3, 6-4 to Evan Deeley and Max Peters.
Women’s Doubles: Regina’s Anna Klemmer and Saskatoon’s Margarita Ter-Grigoryan lost 6-3, 6-1 to Mariya Gedz and Gabby Prince.
Men’s Beach Volleyball
Saskatoon’s Paul Mytopher and Luke Enstrom defeated Northwest Territories 21-9, 21-17 in their first Consolation game and will face Newfoundland in the ninth-10th place game on Saturday.
Women’s Beach Volleyball
Saskatoon’s Erika Markentin and White City’s Alexa Smith defeated B.C. 11-21, 21-17, 15-11 in their quarter-final and will now face Quebec in the semifinal on Saturday. The winner will face either Alberta or Ontario for gold, while the semifinal losers will play for bronze.
