2025 Canada Summer Games: Saskatchewan continues to hunt for medals as first week nears end

Team Sask continues to sit at two medals as events begin to wrap up in Week 1

ST. JOHN’S -- Saskatchewan continues to find the podium to be elusive at the 2025 Canada Summer Games, as they remain at two medals heading into the final two days of Week 1.

Team Sask is currently in eighth place in the medal standings with a gold and bronze medal.

Men’s Basketball

Saskatchewan faced Quebec in the quarter-finals and would drop a 90-64 decision.

Team Sask got off to a tough start and fell behind 32-15 in the opening quarter and trailed 52-26 at halftime. 

Martensville’s Zane Litzenberger led Sask with 15 points, while Saskatoon’s Isak Larsen scored 13 and North Battleford’s Nate Fransoo added 10.

Saskatchewan now drops to the Consolation draw and will take on Nova Scotia on Friday to determine which placement game they will play in on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball

Team Sask took on British Columbia in the quarter-finals and threw a bit of a scare into their opponents before dropping a 74-65 decision.

B.C. led 16-9 after the first quarter and 37-21 at half before Saskatchewan roared back in the third quarter, outscoring B.C. 26-17 and getting within four points at one stage. That would be as close as they’d get, though, and B.C. would pull away for the win.

Saskatoon’s Ryan Deutscher had the best game of the tournament for Saskatchewan with 24 points and 17 rebounds, while Regina’s Jael Wells scored 12, Regina’s Hayden Kot had 11 points and 12 rebounds. 

Saskatchewan next faces Prince Edward Island in their first Consolation side game on Friday to determine their placement game on Saturday.

Women’s Lacrosse

Saskatchewan lost 3-2 to Manitoba in their first Consolation side game and will now face New Brunswick for seventh place on Friday.

Canoe / Kayak

Women’s C-1 200 metres: Casa Rio’s Amanda Walker (59.41) finished second in the Consolation Heat.

Men’s C-1 5,000 metres: Regina’s Baer Robertson (30:32.83) finished in fifth place.

Men’s C-2 200 metres: Robertson and Regina’s Emmett Patterson (44.46) finished fourth, three seconds off a medal.

Women’s IC-4 200 metres: Walker, Regina’s Hayley Bosovich, Saskatoon’s Abbie Brook, and Saskatoon’s Kaelynn Rochefort (56.09) finished second in the Consolation Heat.

Men’s K-1 200 metres: Saskatoon’s Lakai Madsen (41.69) finished second in the Consolation Heat. 

Men’s K-1 5,000 metres: Regina’s Nic Lahaye (27:54.30) finished seventh.

Women’s K-1 5,000 metres: Regina’s Eve Wilson (28:28.55) finished fourth and missed the podium by just over a minute.

Women’s K-2 200 metres: Bosovich and Saskatoon’s Aley Chrunik (50.01) finished first in the Consolation Heat.

Men’s K-4 200 metres: LaHaye, Madsen, Saskatoon’s Ashton Rochefort and Saskatoon’s Will Syroishka (38.50) finished fifth in the Medal Heat.

Sailing

There’s plenty of catching up taking place, with the event cramming in five races in each division after being delayed due to an encroaching forest fire.

Wynyard’s Daniel Laverty is currently in fifth place with 28 points in the Men’s Single Handed ILCA, and had a third place finish in race five.

Saskatoon’s Elly Vardeh-Esakian is in eighth place with 60 points in the Women’s Single Handed ILCA class.

Saskatoon’s Joseph Gumulcak and Rhys Kelm are in eighth place with 86 points in the Men’s Double Handed 29er division.

Things are all caught up heading into Friday, with both divisions having a single race befoe wrapping up on Saturday.

Soccer

Saskatchewan defeated Yukon 3-0 in their first Qualification game and will face Manitoba in the 9th-place game on Friday.

Saskatoon’s Zach Kim scored Sask’s lone goal in the first half. Saskatoon’s Giorgio Artunduaga and Yorkton’s Ololade Oleleye added a pair of insurance markers in the 63rd and 71st minute respectively in the second half.

Saskatoon’s Landon Bagonluri picked up the clean sheet in goal.

Women’s Softball

Saskatchewan lost 4-0 to Prince Edward Island in the seventh-place game and as a result will finish eighth in the 2025 Canada Summer Games.

Team Sask had only five hits in the game, with Debden’s Rhyan Amundson, Saskatoon’s Cadence Colborn, Oxbow’s Rayelle Cooley, Saskatoon’s Courtney Frohaug and Moose Jaw’s Blake Maltais reaching base.

Saskatoon’s Ireland Trevarthen started and allowed three hits over 5 ⅔ innings, striking out nine. Moose Jaw’s Ava Unser pitched 1 ⅓ innings and allowed four runs, three earned on three hits.

Swimming

Men’s Special Olympics 50m freestyle: Swift Current’s Tate Zimmerman (49.40) finished 15th, Gull Lake’s Chayce Foster (53.20) finished 16th.

Women’s Special Olympics 50m freestyle: Swift Current’s Rahimay Priebe (46.48) finished 12th, Swift Current’s Avery Underhill (55.11) finished 15th.

Men’s Para 50m freestyle: Moose Jaw’s Leo Zheng (729 points) finished eighth in the A Final.

Men’s 100m freestyle: Martensville’s Scott Heinbigner (56.70) finished 29th, Saskatoon’s Oliver Genest (56.98) finished 31st, Saskatoon’s Noah Findlay (57.24) finished 33rd and  Saskatoon’s Foster Fourney (59.24) finished 39th.

Women’s 100m freestyle: Saskatoon’s Piper Lejbak (1:01.90) finished fourth in the B Final, Regina’s Cashis Taypotat (1:03.01) finished eighth in the same race. Saskatoon’s Avery Houle (1:03.78) and Neuanlage’s Mariah Weber (1:07.20) finished outside the Finals.

Women’s 800m freestyle: Regina’s Macy Harlos (9:35.73) finished ninth, Martensville’s Nicole Godbout (9:57.20) finished 14th.

Men’s 1,500m freestyle: Regina’s Owen Eisler (17:48.44) finished 12th, Saskatoon’s Landon Kennedy (17:50.64) finished 13th.

Men’s 50m butterfly: Regina’s Soren Hansen (27.04) finished third in the B Final, Warman’s Austyn Spiller (27.44) finished sixth in the same race. Regina’s Joshua Austin-Koyl (27.52) finished 26th, Genest (27.54) finished 27th.

Women’s 50m butterfly: Regina’s Tenley Rogina (30.54) finished fifth in the B Final, Regina’s Jasmine Rogoza (30.77) finished sixth in the same race. Regina’s Bella George (32.27) finished 36th, Weber (33.88) finished 41st.

Men’s Para 150m (SM1-4) / 200m (SM5-14) individual medley: Moose Jaw’s Leo Zheng (423 points) finished 11th.

Men’s 200m individual medley: White City’s Inigo Gutierrez (2:14.14) finished sixth in the A Final, Saskatoon’s Kian Wu (2:18.82) finished fifth in the B Final. Regina’s Max Zhao (2:23.37) finished 26th, Kennedy (2:26.19) finished 35th.

Women’s 200m individual medley: Houle (2:32.06) finished fourth in the B Final. Rogoza (2:38.37) finished 25th, Regina’s Gillian Kimens (2:39.05) finished 26th, Regina’s Sarah Beare (2:42.77) finished 33rd.

Men’s Beach Volleyball

Saskatoon’s Paul Mytopher and Luke Enstrom dropped a 21-18, 21-16 decision to Ontario to finish with a 1-2 record and in fourth place in Pool A. 

They then fell 21-17, 21-13 to New Brunswick in their first qualification game and wil face an to-be-determined opponent on Friday in their opening Consolation side game.

Women’s Beach Volleyball

Saskatoon’s Erika Markentin and White City’s Alexa Smith lost 21-19, 21-18 to Quebec and finished third in Pool D with a 1-2 record.

They now advance to the quarter-final, where they’ll face either B.C. or Ontario for the right to move on to the medal round.
