The Western Hockey League’s B.C. Division barely made it through their first weekend of play before a team was forced to pause due to a positive COVID-19 test.

The WHL announced Tuesday morning that a staff member of the Kelowna Rockets had tested positive for the novel coronavirus and as a result all team activities have been suspended.

No players within the team cohort have tested positive at this time.

The game between the Rockets and Kamloops Blazers scheduled for Tuesday night has been postponed.

The B.C. Division returned to play on Mar. 26 and the Rockets had played two games, winning 5-0 over Victoria on Mar. 26 and dropping a 6-0 decision to the Vancouver Giants on Mar. 28.

Complicating matters is the format the division is using to return to play -- teams are playing games exclusively in two hub centres, one of which is located in Kelowna, the other in Kamloops.

Like the Central and East Divisions, the B.C. Division is using weekly private PCR testing, with all tests being processed by DynaLIFE Labs in order to keep stress off public health systems. DynaLIFE was used by the NHL in their playoff hub last season.

Further information will be provided by WHL as team testing is completed.
