Special teams difficulties sink AAA Warriors against Swift Current

Warriors drop 4-1 decision at Mosaic Place on Thursday
The Moose Jaw AAA Warriors had been concerned about the number of penalties they had been taking the early part of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League season.

On Thursday night against the Swift Current Legionnaires, it was the other aspect of special teams that would let them down at a crucial moment.

The Legionnaires took four straight minor penalties over a span of seven minutes early in the third period but the Warriors were only able to score once as they would go on to drop a 4-1 decision at Mosaic Place. Moose Jaw would finish 1-for-5 on the power play.

The Warriors were able to stay out of the box themselves for the most part, but when they did take penalties, it was at bad times, including a stretch in the second period where they were hit with two minors and a double minor in a span of five minutes.

Swift Current were unable to take advantage themselves, scoring only once as Brett Fogg gave the Legionnaires a 1-0 lead at 13:28 of the frame.

Making the final period all the more frustrating for the Warriors was that in spite of Legionnaires’ penalty streak, it was the visitors who dominated the scoresheet.
Riley Dekowny would score twice in the period and Maguire Scheidt had their other marker as Swift Current took over the game.

Kirk Mullen would score the Warriors’ only goal with 3:31 gone in the third.

Chase Coward made 28 saves in goal for Moose Jaw while Jacob Herman had 34 stops for the Legionnaires.

The Warriors fell to 3-3-0-0 on the season with the loss and are currently tied for seventh place, while Swift Current improved to 5-5-0-0 and sit alone in fifth.

Next action for Moose Jaw is Saturday when they travel to Prince Albert to face the first-place Mintos.
