SaskPower will be replacing 17km of underground cable and 80 km of duct work in various cities across the province, including Moose Jaw.

Sunningdale, VLA, Regal Heights, and Westhealth are the listed areas to be affected by the installation in Moose Jaw. Neighbourhoods in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Emerald Park, and White City are also on the list.

The replacement of the selected cables and ducts is part of SaskPower’s ongoing project to replace aging equipment, as it can be cited as the cause of about 35 per cent of unplanned power outages each year.

The new underground cables with improve power reliability, and reduce the chances of unplanned outages. The addition of underground duct work will make it easier to install underground powerlines and could even improve outage restoration times.

In order to complete the replacements, SaskPower will require some planned power outages. The areas affected will be notified of upcoming interruptions to their power service by contractors or through the mail.

The estimated cost of the project this year is $15 million, and SaskPower plans on continuing underground work with an additional $11 million next year.
