Palaschuk wins high school cross country gold

Central runner claims midget girls title; Cyclones win 4A school title, Peacock third
Moose Jaw has another high school cross country running gold medalist.

One year after Vanier’s Allison Grajczyk-Jelinski took first place in the senior girls division, it was Jadyn Palaschuk’s turn to land on top of the podium in the midget girls class at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Assocation provincial championships in Prince Albert on Saturday.

Palaschuk crossed the line in a time of 11 minutes, 17 seconds, finishing 1:06 better than Yorkton Sacred Heart’s Belen Reed.

Interestingly enough, Palaschuk was almost joined on the podium by another Moose Jaw competitor – Aria Swanson finished in sixth place, but was only five seconds out of second place in a mass sprint to the finish among seven runners.

Competing in the junior girls division, Central’s Akuol Riak also just missed winning a medal, with her time of 15:20 seeing her land eight seconds back of third in fourth place.

The senior girls division saw Peacock’s Alyssa Roney have the top local finish, with her time of 15:48 good enough for fifth.

In the midget boys division, Gravelbourg’s Brexsen Streib had South Central’s top finish at 28th in a time of 11:46.

Central’s Jacob King put together a top-10 placing in junior boys, crossing the line in 14:06 to finish ninth overall.

The top South Central performance in the senior boys class came from Gravelbourg’s Julien Gauthier, who took 20th place in a time of 17:42.

The 4A school team award saw the Central Cyclones take first place with 34 points; Peacock was third with 38. The South Central team finished second in midget girls and in senior girls.

The midget division races were run over 3,000 metres, while the junior divisions and senior girls covered 4,000 metres and senior boys 5,000 meters.
