Miller Express sweep doubleheader with Cardinals

Borst, Nicolosi quality starts lead to 8-4 and 4-3 wins in Yorkton
Baseball becomes a whole lot easier when the other team simply can’t score runs.

And when you have two pitchers tossing quality starts in back-to-back games of a doubleheader, well, you’re going to have a pretty good chance to win.

The Moose Jaw Miller Express had just that in Western Canadian Baseball League action on Friday in Yorkton, as Michael Borst and Jeff Nicolosi put together impressive performances on the mound to lead Moose Jaw to 8-4 and 4-3 victories.

Due to the doubleheader, both games were only seven innings.

The Express improved to 19-14 with their third win in a row and are now a league-best 8-2 in their last 10 games. Moose Jaw sit 4 ½ games back of the Eastern Division leading Weyburn Beavers and 5 ½ games up on Melville for the final playoff spot.

Express 8, Yorkton 4

Yorkton got off to a good start against Borst in the twinbill opener, scoring three runs after a two-out error prolonged the first inning.

As it turns out, that would be all the offence the Cardinals would put together until the seventh, as Borst wouldn’t give up another run until the final frame, scattering eight hits and striking out seven along the way.

The Express got their bats going in the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs to take control of the contest. Alex Orenczuk, and Tucker Zdunich each had two-run singles in the inning, while Andres Garza knocked in a pair with a double.

Moose Jaw would tack on two more runs in the fifth.

Zdunich finished the game with a pair of runs to go with his RBIs, while Markus Melendez went 2-for-2 with a double, run scored and an RBI. Cole Warken was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Express 4, Yorkton 3

Nicolosi carried a no-hitter through four innings before Cade Corbett picked up Yorkton’s first hit, scoring Kai Takahashi-Ho with the Cardinals’ first run in the process after Ho reached earlier on an error.

The Express led 3-1 at that point and scored another in the sixth to up their lead to three. They would need every one of those runs to hang on when Yorkton took advantage of a pair of errors in the seventh to pull within one.

Nicolosi left the game with two outs in the seventh and the tying run on second, but standout reliever Jack Gamba struck out Shawn Munro for the final out and the victory.

The Express and Cardinals are back in action tonight in Yorkton before Moose Jaw travels to Weyburn on Sunday. Next home action is the start of a three-game mid-week set with the Lethbridge Bulls beginning Tuesday.
