Lynbrook Golf Club driving range to open Thursday

Warm weather through later half of week leads to local golf course offering players a jump on the season -- and something to do in era of COVID-19

As strange as it may seem, this will likely been the scene at the Lynbrook Golf Course on Thursday.
It might seem almost unbelievable after what the province went through on Monday, but the Lynbrook Golf Club still plans to open their driving range for the season on Thursday morning.

Yes, you read that right -- only three days after a brutal winter storm with 100 km/h winds tore through Moose Jaw, folks will be able to once again swing the clubs and start getting ready for the season literally tomorrow.

“We had a couple nice days and a real nice weekend a week or so ago and people started to text me asking if the range is open and the board decided to shoot for April 1,” said Lynbrook pro shop manager Ray Wareham on Wednesday afternoon.

“Other than that little hiccup on Monday there, I think we’re going to be able to get it open (Thursday) and ready for the long weekend, and with the COVID and everything it’ll be nice for people to come out and have something to do.”

With how nice the weather had been in the lead-up to the storm, the Lynbrook actually found itself in a good position for opening the range. In fact, once all is said and done, the blast of winter will actually amount to little more than an extra bit of moisture for the course.

And it’s only going to get better as the week comes to an end.

Temperatures are predicted to be in the 16 C range on Thursday and sunny, with daytime highs in the low teams right through Tuesday.

The Lynbrook proshop will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and a bucket of balls will run you $15 for an extra-large, 100-plus-ball bucket, $12 for large, $9 for medium and $6 for small.

Of course, precautions will be in place -- regular COVID duties such as social distancing and wearing masks indoors as well as sanitization of equipment will still be a thing, especially as Moose Jaw is under a watch for variant spread.

“They’ll come and check-in at the pro shop and pick up their balls and whatnot, typically it’s normal as can be with COVID after that,” Wareham said. “We’re open for people to come in and pick up their memberships, too, and that’ll give people after work a chance to come out. It’s still cool in the morning so that’s what we thought we’d do until the course opens up and we get back to our more normal times.”

As for the course itself, that opening date is expected to be closer to a normal mid-April start.
