Lepine holds lead after first round of men’s city golf championship

Opening-round 71 sees 2018 runner-up holding one-shot lead over Leighton Bearchell heading into second round at Lynbrook Sunday
Nick Lepine missed winning his first Moose Jaw city men’s golf championship by a short putt and single shot in 2018.

Now he finds himself with another chance to claim the title after a strong opening round in the 2019 championship Saturday at the Hillcrest Golf Club – and he’ll have some familiar faces around as he tries to do it.

Lepine carded an even-par 71 to lead by a single stroke over Leighton Bearchell and four shots over defending champion Trevor Benson. Also in contention after the first round are perennial contenders Brett Sentes (75) and Shawn Loney (76), while former champions Mark Albert (76) and Doug Gillies (76) are also in touch with the leaders, with Jordan Banlivec (77) rounding out the top eight.

The tournament’s final round takes place Sunday morning at the Lynbrook Golf and Country Club – where Lepine set the course record of 63 earlier this year.
