If you got out into the woods this summer, you could be in for a surprise.

With summer in full swing and many residents heading out doors for activities like hiking and camping, the Ministry of Environment is reminding residents to watch for bears.

Saskatchewan has a healthy black bear population. As a result, it is not unusual to see bears in the wild at this time of year as they establish new territory.

Bears may wander through communities and campgrounds. Thus, proper food storage, cooking methods, and garbage handling are necessary for safe camping in bear country.

The ministry encourages everyone to be bear aware by removing bear attractants in their area. This will help reduce the number of bears that are euthanized or relocated each year.

If you have an aggressive encounter with a bear, contact your local Ministry of Environment office or call the Turn in Poachers and Polluters (TIPP) line at 1-800-667-7561.

Additional information about bear safety is available at www.saskatchewan.ca.
