Food donations in Moose Jaw keeping up for Thanksgiving

Following a request for donations posted on its Facebook page, Riverside Mission is much more prepared for its upcoming Thanksgiving meal on Oct. 11.

An influx of ingredients reached the Mission’s kitchen last week, including several turkeys and a tower of pumpkin pie, all of which will be used to provide a Thanksgiving meal for an estimated 100 people.

Rachel Mullens, emergency services manager at the Mission, was impressed with the immediate response from the community and grateful for the generosity.

“It's an amazing feeling, to have people just stop what they're doing to bring stuff,” said Mullens. “Every little bit counts, every little bit helps, and . . . especially at this time, at Thanksgiving, we're just overwhelmed with the generosity of this community and how they just give and give and give. We always know we can pull off any meal because of the generosity of the community.”

The Mission hosts a Thanksgiving meal each year, and couldn’t do so without donations and volunteers from the community. Donations are always welcome, as the Mission is always in need of meal supplies and nothing ever goes to waste.

As for the Thanksgiving meal, the last thing left on Riverside’s list is buns to go with the traditional turkey meal being planned.

The Moose Jaw & District Food Bank is also in need of some donations moving into the fall season, including Kraft Dinner, soup, boxed cereal, Sidekicks, stovetop stuffing, and Hamburger Helper.

This year the Food Bank has seen an increase in clients needing their services, and are expecting those high client numbers to continue. This leaves them looking for more of their staple items to fill that need.

Although the Food Bank doesn’t offer a specific Thanksgiving program, they are trying to put some festive meal supplies into their October packages — things like stovetop stuffing, turkeys, and canned cranberry sauce. The Food Bank also always welcomes donations of fresh vegetables at their location at 305 Fairford St. W.
