Cornerstone into second in boys volleyball, Peacock wins girls first-place showdown

Final weeks of regular season to offer plenty of intrigue as playoffs near
The Cornerstone Christian School Falcons have quietly put together a solid season in the Moose Jaw high school boys volleyball league, and now they find themselves holding down second place with only two weeks left in the regular season.

A major part of that move came in Tuesday night’s league action when they defeated the then-second-place Avonlea Eagles 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 27-25). Had the Falcons found success in their game against Central on Thursday, they’d actually be nipping at the heels of the league-leading Vanier Vikings. Instead, the Cyclones improved to 3-2 and kept themselves in the hunt for a spot in the top two with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15) win.

The Eagles, meanwhile remained at three wins after losing 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-20) to the Vikings. Vanier improved to 6-0 and haven’t dropped a set in league play since their five-set war with Avonlea to open the season.

The Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars are also 3-2 on the campaign courtesy a 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-18) win over Peacock (0-5) on Thursday.

In girls league action, the Peacock Toilers picked up their second win over the Vanier Spirits in as many recent meetings, improving to 4-1 with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21) victory.

Vanier maintained their hold on first place at 5-1 with their 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) win over Cornerstone

Briercrest Christian emerged victorious in the closest game of the week as they downed the Falcons 3-2 ((20-25, 25-16, 29-27, 20-25, 15-8) to improve to 3-2 on the campaign. Cornerstone dropped to 1-5 with the two loss.

League action continues Tuesday, Oct. 22 with Peacock at Cornerstone and Vanier at Central in girls action (both games 6:20 p.m.), while in boys play Vanier is also at Central, Briercrest Christian is at Riverview (both games 8 p.m.) and Cornerstone travels to Avonlea (7 p.m.).
