Brisson, Alberta defeat Mateychuk, Robson and Manitoba at WHL Cup

Mateychuk player of the game for Manitoba in 7-3 loss
The Moose Jaw Warriors will be very interested spectators at the 2019 WHL Cup, as four of their top prospects are currently in action at the Under-16 hockey showcase.

In the first day of action on Thursday, Team Alberta and Tribe prospect Carson Brisson took a 7-3 victory over Denton Mateychuk, Luke Robson and Team Manitoba.

Brisson, the Warriors’ first pick in the fifth round, had two assists in the win.

Mateychuk, meanwhile scored twice for Manitoba as they trailed 4-1 after the first and 6-1 through two periods. Mateychuk – the Warriors first pick, 11th overall in the 2019 draft – would go on to be named Manitoba’s player of the game.

“We started out strong,” Mateychuk said on WHL.ca. “We had a couple penalties that killed us. Overall, five-on-five, I thought we played really well.”

Robson, who earlier in the event had the second best fitness-testing score for Manitoba, was held off the scoresheet.

Goaltender Kyle Kelsey, the Warriors fifth-round pick in 2019, did not play in for Team B.C. in their 6-4 win over Team Saskatchewan. Moose Jaw AAA Warriors goaltender Dylan Ernst also played back-up for Team Sask.

Tournament action continues Friday, with Manitoba taking on B.C. and Alberta duelling Saskatchewan.
