It might be early in the Alberta Colleges Athleitc Conference men’s hockey season, but the Briercrest College Clippers find themselves off to a solid start.

The Clippers improved to 2-2 in the young campaign after splitting a pair of games with the University of Alberta Augustana at the Barkman Arena during the Oct. 28 weekend.

Briercrest lost their opener on Friday night 3-2 to Augustana (4-2) before rebounding with a 3-2 victory in the rematch a day later.

In their opening game, Colton Aikens and Jacob Arsenault scored in the first period to give the Clippers a 2-1 lead, but Augustana scored single goals the next two frames to take the win.

Dominik Tmej made 28 saves in the loss, Ryan Miley had two assists.

The rematch saw Curtis Wiebe score a power play goal with 9:17 gone in the third period to secure the win. Wiebe also had a goal on the man advantage in the first period, while Halen Cordoni scored their other marker in the opening 20 minutes.

Kolter Pawlick turned aside 30 shots to earn the win.

Briercrest is back in action during the Nov. 4 weekend when they travel to Red Deer (4-1-1). Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Briercrest Clippers women’s basketball team put together a fourth-quarter comeback to pick up a 48-46 win over the CCAA 11th-ranked Lethbridge College Kodiaks in their home opener on Oct. 28.

Things didn’t go quite as well in the rematch a day later, as Lethbridge went on to a 71-56 victory.

Melissa Ellis and Brooklyn Martens -- the Clippers student athlete of the week -- each hit free throws late in the fourth quarter to break a 45-45 tie and help put away the win in Friday’s match-up. Martens led all scorers with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Amber Fichtner scored 10 points and 12 rebounds. Taylor Baerg added 11 boards.

Saturday’s rematch was another close game, but Lethbridge outscored Briercrest 24-14 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Fichtner had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Martens picked up 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Clippers are now 2-2 in the ACAC South Division and return to action this weekend when they host Concordia (2-0) Friday and King’s University (1-1) Saturday. Both game times are 6 p.m.

The Clippers men’s basketball team took a couple of tough losses at the hands of the Kodiaks, falling 103-69 on Friday and following with a 92-67 loss in the rematch Saturday.

Zach Martens led the Clippers with 15 points and 13 rebounds in their weekend opener, while Matthew Bryant picked up 15 points and 10 rebounds. Oroma Bongomin was their top scorer with 17 points.

Riley Seaborn had six points for Briercrest, while fellow Moose Jaw products Kaedyn Banilevic and Danny Mullens played five and 11 minutes respectively and had a rebound each.

Less than 24 hours later, it was Seaborn’s turn to lead the offence, putting up 16 points. Bongomin added 14 while Mullens had a pair of rebounds.

The Clippers are 0-4 on the season and are back in action against Concordia and Kings Friday and Saturday, with tip-off at 8 p.m. both nights.

The men’s and women’s volleyball teams both had byes on Oct. 28-29 but are back in action this weekend.

The Clippers men’s team are off to a 3-1 start and sit second in the South Division. That’s good enough for recognition from the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA), which has the Clippers ranked 10th nationally.

Both teams are on the road this weekend, playing at Concordia on Friday and King’s University on Saturday.
