The provincial government is reminding motorists to be aware of highway construction and work zones while travelling across the province this Canada Day long weekend.
“Whether you’re planning a road trip to the lake or driving to visit friends, it’s a good idea to plan ahead by checking in with the highway hotline,” said Lori Carr, minister of Highways and Infrastructure. “Our crews will be out working all weekend, so please drive carefully for your safety and theirs.”
Drivers are reminded to be alert when approaching construction zones and comply with the posted signage and speed limits.
“We have recently had some close calls with drivers in the construction zones and were fortunate no one was seriously hurt,” said Josh Safronetz, CEO of HJR Asphalt. “Our workers are vulnerable in these areas and we can’t stress enough how critical it is for drivers to slow down and pay attention to the posted signs and speed limits.”
There are some occasions when construction zones have temporary speed reductions left in place even when workers are not present, and during night time hours. A sharp pavement drop-off, lane closure or loose gravel are examples of hazards that would warrant a slower posted speed.

• Highway 167 surfacing near Weyakwin
• Highway 255 surfacing near Tobin Lake
