Candace Newkirk and the Sherilee Orsted rink are 2-1 and in contention for a playoff spot at the Moose Jaw SWCT stop.

It’s pretty much become a given at this point that if Penny Barker shows up at the Moose Jaw stop on the Sask Women’s Curling Tour, her rink will be in serious contention.

That’s once again the case this time around as Barker, third Christie Gamble, second Jenna Enge and lead Danielle Sicinski are one of three unbeaten teams heading into the final round robin draw on Saturday evening at the Moose Jaw Curling Centre.

The defending Viterra Scotties provincial women’s champions have looked the part, too, especially with how things went in their first two games when it came to putting up crooked numbers.

Barker used a five-spot in the sixth end to take a 10-4 win over Alyssa Resch (0-4) in their opener Friday night and followed up Saturday morning with a six-ender in the first end against Stephanie Thompson (1-2) before taking a 10-2 victory. Things were far closer in Barker’s most recent round robin match-up, as she would go on to a 5-4 win over Sherilee Orsted (2-1).

Orsted includes Moose Jaw’s Candace Newkirk at third and is one of many teams in the hunt for one of seven playoff spots heading into the final draw.

Jessica Mitchell and Mandy Selzer are both 3-0 and are slated to face one another in the final preliminary round draw Saturday night, while Brooklyn Stevenson and Sherry Anderson join Orsted with 2-1 records.

Depending how things shake out in the last draw, a host of 1-2 teams could also be in contention, including Moose Jaw’s Skylar Ackerman and Cindy Ricci, who will face each other to close out the round robin.

Elaine Robson and her rink of third Sandi Gray, second Haley Spenser, lead Sheri Logan and alternate Lorraine Arguin finished 1-3, following their 8-6 loss to Selzer Friday with a 9-3 win over Callan Hamon, 8-2 loss to Mitchell and 8-3 loss to Brett Barber.

The top team out of the three round robin pools advances directly to the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, while the next six teams will play in the quarter-finals at 9 a.m.

The gold medal game is set for 4 p.m. Sunday.
