Ackerman wins opener at U-18 curling provincials

Moose Jaw rink off to solid start in defence of their championship with 9-2 win in tournament opener

Moose Jaw’s Skylar Ackerman is off to the kind of start she hoped for at the Under-18 women’s provincial curling championship in Regina.

Ackerman and her Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre rink of third Madison Johnson, second Chantel Hoag and lead Samantha McLaren wasted little time in opening the defence of their provincial title as they rolled to a 9-2 four-end win over Saltcoats’ Jessica Farquharson.

Ackerman opened with four in the first end before stealing two in the second for a quick 6-0 lead. Farquharson got two back in the third, but that would be as close as they’d get as Ackerman’s three in the fourth brought things to an early end.

The local foursome is coming off a playoff appearance at the Canada Winter Games earlier this month.

Ackerman next faces Martensville’s Amy Remeshylo in the ‘A’ side semifinal this evening.
