STRAYER
Glenys May Strayer (née: Carter), born August 7th, 1925 in Rouleau, SK, passed away the morning of Friday, June 6th, 2025, just short of her 100th milestone birthday.
Glenys was born to Robert and Cecile Carter (both deceased) of Rouleau, SK and she was a welcome little sister to her brother Ronald (deceased). Glenys had numerous friends growing up in Rouleau, with her “Gang Busters” friends being her lifelong truest. Joe, Goldie, Lorna (all deceased) and Glenys were together for years and years helping each other through life’s challenges. Glenys learned piano as a girl and was a fantastic player, she loved to sing as well, and she shared her talents with many at bridal showers, Christmas concerts, and church events.
Glenys met farmer and carpenter Donald Strayer (deceased) of Drinkwater, SK at a dance in Rouleau and it was game over for both. They married in the Fall of 1946 and welcomed their first born, Robert, in the summer of 1947. Next came son Ronald (deceased), followed by daughter Carol closely behind. Glen (deceased) was born four years later and eight years after that, Dianne was added to the family. Together, Don and Glenys built a successful farm at Drinkwater for over 40 years, before retiring to Moose Jaw in the late 1980’s. Unfortunately for them, Don didn’t have a long retirement before he passed. However, life goes on, and Glenys was fortunate to be blessed with another great love, George Carney (deceased). George’s nickname for Glenys was “the little general”, which made us all grin because he certainly understood her, lol.
Glenys was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Rouleau Chapter. She and Don loved to square dance and spent many evenings in the company of their friends dancing and having fun. Glenys’ great love was gardening and keeping her yard colourful with much loved varieties of flowers, shrubs and trees. Whether on the farm or in the city, her yard was beautiful, inviting and inspiring. Glenys also loved to cook and bake for her family and friends, and she was incredibly talented. Everyone loved Glenys’ cookies, cinnamon rolls and freshly baked breads. People were always welcome at her table, and she loved to shower them with her tasty gifts.
Eventually, as Glenys aged and her health declined, she moved to Mulberry Estates, and several care homes in the area, then spent her last few years in Providence Place on Edgar Hall. The family would like to sincerely thank all staff who cared for Glenys over the years, particularly to Michelle and staff on Edgar Hall as they saw her through. Also, a “special thank you” to Glenys’ neighbour and caretaker friend, Peter “Doug”. The family is very grateful for your care Doug! One last “thank you” to son-in-law Glenn. Glenys would often laugh with and tease Glenn because she knew and appreciated that it’s not every son-in-law that is willing to tag along on hundreds of visits to her “mad house”, lol.
There is so much more to a person’s life than a few short sentences can convey. It’s difficult to summarize nearly 100 years of life. Glenys will be remembered forever by all those who loved her and whom she touched.
Left to grieve Glenys are her children: eldest son, Robert, eldest daughter, Carol, and me, youngest daughter, Dianne (Glenn); daughter-in-law, Candy (Ron’s wife); as well as numerous very loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Private Family Graveside Service honouring Glenys will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Glenys’ memory may be made to the local Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of one’s choice.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish
but have eternal life.” John 3:16
