Moose Jaw’s Graeme Fish has been recognized for his outstanding performance on the international speedskating stage recently. On Jan. 22, he was named the recipient of the Sask Sport Inc. December Athlete of the Month Award.

Fish won a bronze medal in the 10,000-metre race at the ISU World Cup 1 in Poland. He skated faster than 20 of the top distance skaters in the world, including Ted-Jan Bloemen, the current world record holder and Olympic Champion in that distance.

At the ISU World Cup 2 in the Netherlands, Fish placed 15th in the 5,000m race, finishing 0.2 seconds off his personal best time.

Fish is a member of Speed Skating Canada's National Development Team where he's training in Calgary at the Olympic Oval. He is scheduled to head to Norway Jan. 25 to compete at the World Cup 5 series of races, to be held Feb. 1-5.

Fish was nominated by the Saskatchewan Amateur Speed Skating Association. The other nominee for December was swimmer Michael McGillivray of Regina.
