WCBL Recap: Regina sneaks past Moose Jaw, Saskatoon takes comeback win over Swift Current

Red Sox score pair of run in bottom of seventh to take 9-7 win over Miller Express, Berries score five in fourth, go on to 11-6 win over 57’s

REGINA -- The Regina Red Sox had an answer for the Moose Jaw Miller Express at just the right time on Sunday afternoon, and would go on to a 9-7 win in the latest battle of the Trans-Canada Clash in Regina.

Regina scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh after falling behind in the top of the inning to secure their sixth-straight win. The other contest involving Saskatchewan teams on Sunday saw the Saskatoon Berries fall behind early before rallying for an 11-6 victory over the Swift Current 57’s in Saskatoon.

Regina 9, Moose Jaw 7

A four-run fifth inning gave the Red Sox a 6-2 lead, but Moose Jaw would roar back with five runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 7-6 contest. That lead wouldn’t last long, though as Regina replied with the aforementioned three in the bottom of seven and would hold on the rest of the way.

James Wright had the key hit for Regina in the seventh, hitting a double to knock home Riley Bender and Jordan Tucker with the go-ahead and insurance runs.

Tanner DeGrazia went 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in for Moose Jaw, while Thomas Soto had three hits and scored a run. Robert Estrada and Gustavo Soto had a pair of hits each.

MIchael Fox and Brady Bye each hit home runs for Regina, with Fox also hitting a double and going 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI. Jacob Steele also had three hits, Jordan Wright went 2-for-4 and knocked in three.

Kai Langford started for Regina and allowed two runs on six hits over three innings, David Hankins pitched the final three innings and picked up the win after allowing two runs on four hits.

Jacob Glazener had a decent start for Moose Jaw with two runs allowed on five hits over four innings, Cristian Garcia was hit with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits while pitching the sixth and seventh.

Regina improves to 21-15 with and are third in the East Division, Moose Jaw falls to 16-21 and remain in fourth in the East.

Saskatoon 11, Swift Current 6

The 57’s scored five runs in the top of the third to take a 5-2 lead, but Saskatoon would put up a five-spot of their own in the fourth before adding a handful of insurance runs in the later innings to secure the victory.

Carter Beck led the Berries offence with a 3-for-4 night that included a home run, double, three runs scored and two RBI. Jalen Freeman also hit a round tripper, scoring a pair of runs and knocking in three. Mason Roell had three hits and knocked in apair.

Jose Ayala went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, Rydell Adair and Braxton Vail also had two hits each.

Carson Obrecht started for Saskatoon and left in the third inning after allowing five runs, three earned on six hits. Matthias Trondson took over and went 3 ⅔, giving up a single run on three hits to earn the win.

Adam Korte was the losing pitcher after giving up seven runs, four earned, on eight hits over five innings.

The Berries -- who locked down a playoff spot on Saturday -- are now 31-5 and first in the East with four-game winning streak. Swift Current falls to 7-29 with their fifth straight loss and are sixth in the East.

Four Saskatchewan teams are in action Monday night, as Weyburn is at Regina (7 p.m.), Saskatoon is at Medicine Hat (7:05 p.m.) and Lethbridge is at Swift Current (7:05 p.m.).
