Canada Summer Games Friday: Medals, medals everywhere as Saskatchewan more than doubles overall total in single day

Team Sask racks up three gold, five silver, six bronze in competition on Friday, moving up to sixth on medal table with 25 total

ST. JOHN’S -- It was a good day to be a member of Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Summer Games on Friday.

Athletes from Team Sask put together one of the best single-day showings at the massive multi-sport event in recent memory, racking up three gold, five silver and six bronze across three events.

All three gold medals came in track and field, with Langham’s Tayen Werner finishing one-two alongside Dilke’s Hailee Woodhouse in the women’s 400 metres, Saskatoon’s Olamide Olaloku winning the women’s triple jump and Saskatoon’s Brendan Cote-Williamson claiming top spot in the Men’s Para Ambulatory 100 metres.

Artistic Swimming

Solo Women’s: North Battleford’s Morgan Vaughn had a score of 399.495 to finish second in the Medal Flight and win the silver medal. Warman’s Natalie Hadland scored 365.438 points to finish fourth in the Consolation Flight.

Athletics

Men’s 100 metres: Saskatoon’s Williams Ogunnubi (10.64) finishes third in the Medal Final and wins the bronze medal. Regina’s Femi Akinloye (10.78) finishes fifth in the Medal Final.

Women’s 100 metres: Saskatoon’s Selena Keyowski (12.21)  finishes seventh in the Medal Final.  Saskatoon’s Timi Adeugba (12.37) finishes fourth in the Consolation Final.

Men’s Special Olympics 100 metres: Assiniboia’s Bradyn Giraudier (12.09) finishes third in the Medal Heat and wins the bronze medal. Assiniboia’s Kyle Giraudier (12.65) wins the Consolation Heat.

Men’s Para Ambulatory 100 metres: Saskatoon’s Brendan Cote-Williamson records  687 points in the Medal Final to finish first and win the gold medal.

Women’s Wheelchair 100 metres: Grayson’s Ayva Delainey finishes sixth in the Medal Final.

Men’s 400 metres: Saskatoon’s Michael Hussey (50.21) finishes eighth in the Medal Final. Regina’s Daniel Eiswirth (50.01) finishes third in the Consolation Final.

Women’s 400 metres: Langham’s Tayen Werner runs 54.40 in the Medal Final to finish in first place and win gold. Dilke’s Hailee Woodhouse finishes second in 54.97 to win silver.

Men’s 1,500 metres: Regina’s Jonathan Podbielski (3:48.40) finishes second in the Medal Final and wins the silver medal.

Women’s 1,500 metres: Regina’s Hannah Gates (4:19.75) finishes second in the Medal Final and wins the silver medal. Moose Jaw’s Katie Rogers (4:34.12) finishes eighth in the Medal Final.

Men’s 400 metre hurdles: Swift Current’s Carter Tuplin (53.97) finishes third in the Medal Final and wins the bronze medal. Swift Current’s Rowan Reimer (57.55) finishes eighth in the Medal Final.

Women’s 400 metre hurdles: Saskatoon’s Happy Oluwasikun (1:01.81) finished third in the Medal Final and wins the bronze medal. 

Men’s 4x100 metre relay: Saskatchewan finishes in 40.95 to win bronze.

Women’s 4x100 metre relay: Saskatchewan finishes in 46.14 to win silver.

Women’s High Jump: Saskatoon’s Chelsea Ells (1.63 metres) finishes seventh in the Medal Final. Saskatoon’s Jocelyn Hanson (1.59 metres) finishes 12th overall.

Men’s Triple Jump: Saskatoon’s Drew Sundberg (13.36 metres) finished 10th overall.

Women’s Triple Jump: Saskatoon’s Olamide Olaloku cleared 12.23 metres in the Medal Final to finish in first place and win gold. Regina’s Kaidyn Keith (11.31 metres) finished ninth overall.

Men’s Javelin: Saskatoon’s Christian Francis (53.59 metres) finished eighth overall. Sundberg (49.41 metres) finished 10th overall.

Women’s Pentathlon: Regina’s Shelaine Pritchard is in first place with 3,236 points after the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 metres. Saskatoon’s Rachel Albertson is in seventh place with 2,739 points.

Men’s Lacrosse

Saskatchewan lost a heartbreaker 7-5 to Alberta in the quarter-final and drop down to the Consolation side.

Team Sask took a 3-1 lead out of the first period but couldn’t make it stick, giving up for goals in the second and falling behind 5-4. That set the stage for the third period, where Saskatchewan would tie things up early before surrendering a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes.

Carnduff’s Kaleb Crossman scored twice for Sask, while Saskatoon’s James Mahussier, Moose Jaw’s Kashton Smith and Saskatoon’s Sam Maxin each had a goal and two assists. 

Saskatchewan faces Manitoba in their Consolation game on Saturday.

Diving

Women’s Platform: Black Point’s Anika Park (239.95) finished in fourth place, Regina’s Finlee Sharp (224.35) finished in eighth place, Regina’s Isa Koop (213.75) finished in 11th place.

Golf

Men’s Individual: Saskatoon’s Ethan Hunter shot a final round 74 to finish with a 303 total and in third place, winning the bronze medal. Saskatoon’s Ryan Mosher shot 75 for a 307 total and an eighth place finish.

Women’s Individual: Saskatoon’s Grace Odnokon had a final round 78 for a 322 total and eighth place. Regina’s Tayla Perry shot 80 to finish at 351 and in 15th place.

Men’s Softball

Saskatchewan posted back-to-back dominant wins -- 12-0 over New Brunswick and 12-1 over B.C. -- before falling 8-1 to Ontario in their final round robin game. As a result, Team Sask finishes 5-3 in the preliminary round and will face Nova Scotia in the semifinal on Saturday.

Against New Brunswick, Rosthern’s Jack Hryciuk tossed a no-hitter in the four-inning mercy-rule win, and came a single error away from pitching a perfect game. He finished with three strikeouts.

Hrycuik also got things done at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs, while Saskatoon’s Brett Slusar also crossed the plate twice and had a pair of RBI. Lac La Ronge’s Sage Roberts hit a home run and knocked in two.

Things weren’t quite as dominant against B.C., but it was a comfortable four-inning win nonetheless.
Jordan Durham started in the circle and gave up a single run while striking out three in three innings of work; Lochlan Dufour tossed a scoreless fourth.

Saskatoon’s Rayn Ray, Owen Nash and Regina’s Kian Poitras all hit home runs, with Poitras going 3-for-3 with two runs and five RBI. Nash crossed the plate three times. 

Saskatchewan managed only two hits against Ontario’s Joseph Weiler, who would strike out 12 on his way to the win.

Slusar scored Team Sask’s only run, Poitras and Davidson’s Hunter Wightman had their only hits. 

Poitras, Saskatoon’s Gaige Epp and Delisle’s Jordan Durham all saw action in the circle for Saskatchewan.

Men’s Volleyball

Saskatchewan lost a heartbreaker 25-21, 33-31, 29-27 to Manitoba in the quarter-final and will face B.C. in their first Consolation side game on Saturday.

Women’s Volleyball

Saskatchewan continued to roll along in their quarter-final, taking a 25-22, 25-23, 25-27, 25-18 victory over Nova Scotia and advancing to the semifinal against Ontario on Saturday.

Wrestling

Men’s Team: Saskatchewan defeated Manitoba 33-22 to finish in fifth place.

Women’s Team: Alberta defeated Saskatchewan 35-19 in the bronze medal dual, Team Sask finishes in fourth place.

The individual events take place all day Saturday.
