Canada Summer Games Thursday: Regina’s Lila Stewart golden again as Team Sask wins two more diving medals

Saskatchewan now at three gold, three silver, six bronze to remain seventh on medal table

ST. JOHN’S -- Saskatchewan continues to light up the pool in the Canada Summer Games diving events, picking up another two medals on Thursday in St. John’s.

Regina’s Lila Stewart picked up her second gold medal and third medal in as many days, recording 263.35 points in the one-metre springboard competition to finish in first place. Stewart also won gold in the artistic diving competition on Tuesday before taking bronze in the three-metre springboard on Wednesday.

Joining Stewart in hitting the podium was Saskatoon’s Kash Tarasoff, who had a total of 316.50 to finish third in the men’s three-metre springboard.

Saskatchewan now has 12 medals, with three gold, three silver and six bronze to remain in seventh place on the medal table.

Artistic Swimming

Women’s Duet: Saskatoon’s Joley Friesen and Sienna Kuchuran recorded 219.679 points in their preliminary round free routine and sit third with 478.721 points heading into the Medal Flight on Saturday. Regina’s Bronte Cawkwell and Quynn Middelkoop had 176.991 points in their free routine to finish with 394.525 points total and advance to the Consolation Flight on Saturday.

Women’s Solo: North Battleford’s Morgan Vaughn had 191.900 points in her free routine for a 397.764 total and fourth place in the preliminary round to advance to the Medal Flight on Friday. Warman’s Natalia Hadland had a 167.536 point free routine for a 358.190 total to finish eighth and move on to the Consolation Flight on Friday.

Women’s Baseball

Saskatchewan wrapped up the round robin with a 9-7 loss to Nova Scotia, finishing 3-1 in Pool B and advancing to the medal round.

Team Sask got off to a great start with a 3-0 lead in the first inning and would hold a 4-3 edge through five. Nova Scotia took control of things with three in the sixth and another three in the seventh for a 9-3 edge before a final inning Saskatchewan comeback fell short.

Saskatoon’s Taylor Schueller led Sask’s offence with a pair of runs scored and two RBI, Saskatoon’s Paisley McHarg had a pair of RBI and Saskatoon’s Brenna Birdsall scored two runs.

Humboldt’s Camden Suchan started on the mound and allowed six runs, four earned, on 11 hits over six innings of work, striking out seven. Regina’s Victoria Bateman finished things off, giving up three runs on four hits in the seventh.

Saskatchewan now faces Ontario in the quarter-final on Saturday, with the winner there advancing to face B.C. in the semifinal, also on Saturday.

Men’s Lacrosse

Team Sask capped a perfect round robin with a 7-0 win over Newfoundland, finishing the preliminary round with a 4-0 record and advancing to Friday’s quarter-final.

Saskatchewan did all the damage they’d need with three goals in the first period before extending their lead to 5-0 through two.

Swift Current's Kai Foster was in goal for the rare box lacrosse shutout.

Prince Albert’s Chase Lehner scored once and finished with five points to lead Sask’s offence, Saskatoon’s James Mahussier had two goals and four points. Saskatoon’s Sam Maxin also scored twice, Carnduff’s Kaleb Crossman and Saskatoon’s Mason Schreffler had their other goals. 

Saskatchewan now faces Alberta in the quarter-final on Friday, with the winner there facing the winner of B.C. and Manitoba in the semifinal on Saturday.

Diving

Women’s 1-metre springboard: Regina’s Lila Stewart recorded 258.50 points to finish in first place in the preliminary round and then put up 263.35 points in the final to win her second gold medal of the Games. Regina’s Isa Koop (213.00) finished seventh, Black Point’s Anika Park (177.80) finished 15th, Regina’s Finlee Sharp (172.50) finished 16th.

Men’s 3-metre springboard: Saskatoon’s Kash Tarasoff finished in third place with 316.50 points to win the bronze medal. Saskatoon’s Casey Spilchak was 14th overall and Regina’s Freddie Moffat finished 16th.

Golf

Men’s Individual: Saskatoon’s Ethan Hunter shot a third-round 80 for a 229 total heading into the final round on Friday. That’s tied for fourth place, one shot back of third and 10 shots off the lead. Saskatoon’s Ryan Mosher shot 78 for a 232 total to sit ninth.

Women’s Individual: Saskatoon’s Grace Odnokon had her best round of the tournament, shooting 77 for a 244 total and ninth place. Regina’s Tayla Perry shot 88 for a 271 total and 16th place heading into the final round.

Mixed Team: Saskatchewan’s 155 in round three and 471 total sees them in sixth place.

Men’s Softball

Saskatchewan lost a heartbreaker 11-10 to Nova Scotia before rebounding with an 8-5 win over Newfoundland. Their 3-2 record is fourth in the preliminary round standings, with three games to come on Friday.

Against Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan took a 10-7 lead into the final inning before giving up three runs, with Nova Scotia then scoring one in the extra inning to pick up the win.

Warman’s Jake Kessler and Saskatoon’s Owen Nash each hit home runs, with Nash knocking in three in the process. Regina’s Kian Poitras was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, Davidson’s Hunter Wightman and Lac La Ronge’s Sage Roberts also crossed the plate twice each.

Saskatoon’s Gaige Epp started in the circle and allowed six runs, three earned, on five hits over four innings. Rosthern’s Jack Hrycuik took the loss after giving up the winning run in the extra inning.

Against Newfoundland, Team Sask scored four in the fourth and snapped a 4-4 tie with another four in the seventh to secure the narrow win.

Saskatoon’s Zach Cook scored half of Saskatchewan’s runs with one swing of the bat in the fourth, hitting a grand slam home run. Nash also homered for the second game in a row, while Hrycuik hit a triple and scored a run.

Epp again got the start and allowed four runs, two earned on seven hits over five innings. Poitras finished things off, giving up a single unearned run in the final two innings.

Saskatchewan wraps up the round robin against New Brunswick, B.C. and Ontario on Friday.

Men’s Volleyball

Saskatchewan lost a heartbreaker to Quebec but took the Pool A winners to the limit in the process, falling 28-26, 26-24, 16-25, 19=25, 15-13.

As a result, Team Sask finishes in second place in Pool A and advance to the quarter-final, where they’ll face Manitoba on Friday.

Women’s Volleyball

Saskatchewan also went to five sets in their final preliminary round game against Manitoba but found the win column, taking a 23-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 15-13 victory,

That sees Team Sask finish with a 3-0 record and in first place in Pool A. They now advance to the quarter-final, where they’ll face the winner of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia on Friday.

Wrestling

Men’s Team: Saskatchewan rolled to a 49-5 win over Prince Edward Island, lost a 36-13 decision to Ontario and won 50-5 over Yukon to close out their round robin with a 3-2 record and third place in Pool A. As a result, they’ll now compete for a medal when they face Manitoba in the bronze medal match on Friday afternoon.

Women’s Team: Saskatchewan posted a pair of commanding wins, defeating Yukon 55-0 before rolling past Manitoba 50-5. They’re undefeated at 4-0 heading into their final round robin match against B.C. on Friday morning, with the winner there advancing to the gold medal match later on Friday.
