Winnipeg scores three shorthanded in win over Warriors

Ice build 4-0 lead, go on to 7-1 victory in WHL action
It put it in the simplest terms, the Moose Jaw Warriors did not look good in Winnipeg against the Ice on Saturday night.

From the Ice simply outduelling Warriors defenders around the net, to creating chance after chance unchecked on goaltender Brock Gould, to Winnipeg scoring three times shorthanded, the Western Hockey League contest looked pretty much exactly what a 7-1 loss for the local squad would look like.

It started early, when Winnipeg’s Michal Teply snuck behind a Warriors defender, took a quick pass from Peyton Krebs and beat Gould five hole only 4:08 into the game.

Things took a turn for the worse for Moose Jaw when the Ice’s Reece Harcsh took a double-minute for high sticking at the 7:46 mark of the period.

Krebs would make it 2-0 a little over two minutes later with Winnipeg’s first shorthanded marker, beating his man to the outside and going in alone before finishing things off with a quick shot to the far side.

It was Owen Pederson’s to add to his man-disadvantage goal total a minute after Krebs’ tally, splitting the defence and going in on a partial break before scoring his 26th of the season.

Teply then picked up his 28th of the season on the power play 6:22 into the second to make it 4-0.

Eric Alarie got the Warriors on the board at the 9:53 mark of the period, taking a feed from Cory King off a neutral zone turnover, going in two-on-one and rifling a shot home low to Winnipeg goaltender Gage Alexander’s glove side.

That would be the only good news for the Tribe, as Pederson would make it 5-1 with 13 seconds left in the second, picking up the puck in his own zone shorthanded, going down his wing unopposed and beating Gould with a shot from the right hashmarks.

Nino Kinder and Isaac Johnson tacked on insurance markers for Winnipeg in the third period.

As the score would indicate, it was another lopsided night on the shotclock, too – Gould once again faced 40-plus shots, stopping 36, while the Warriors had only 14 on Alexander.

The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday when they host the Saskatoon Blades. Game time is 7 p.m. at Mosiac Place.
