SWIFT CURRENT -- It was a week ago that the Swift Current 57’s endured one of their toughest defeats in recent memory, giving up 27 runs in a loss to the Moose Jaw Miller Express.

Saturday night, the baseball gods decided to pay them back.

The 57’s fell behind 9-0 after two innings to the Weyburn Beavers in Swift Current but would storm back and then some, going on to a 25-14 victory in Western Canadian Baseball League action.

Five other games were rained out, including Energy City at Saskatoon, Sylvan Lake at Regina, Moose Jaw at Medicine Hat, Fort McMurray at Brooks and Okotoks at Lethbridge.

Swift Current 25, Weyburn 14

The Beavers got off to a great start and led 11-0 when Swift Current came to bat in the bottom of the third inning. The 57’s would start chipping away from that point on, and before long the runs would start to add up.

Five in their half of the third, another four in the fourth and five more in the fifth gave Swift Current a 14-13 lead, and they’d tack on three more in the sixth before an eight-run seventh put the game away for good.

Luis Ayala finished a triple away from the cycle for the 57’s, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and five runs batted in. Jose Ayala hit two doubles and was 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI, while Braxton Vall had a three-run home run as his only hit, scoring four runs and knocking in four in total. Gus Koehn also had four hits and scored four runs.

Ian Heck led Weyburn’s offence, going 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI, while Ryan Dauphinee was 4-for-6 with a run and four RBI. Trevor Dale had a three-run home run as his lone hit, Brayden Mayencourt crossed the plate three times.

Shunta Furuya ended up as the winning pitcher for Swift Current, throwing 3 ⅓ shutout innings and giving up only four hits after the 57’s early deficit.

Ethan Webster was hit with the loss after allowing five runs in 1 ⅓ innings of work as Swift Current mounted their comeback.

Swift Current is now 5-15 and in sixth in the East Division, Weyburn falls to 6-13 and are fifth.

League action continues Sunday with Energy City playing a doubleheader in Saskatoon (1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.), Moose Jaw at Medicine Hat (2:05 p.m.), Swift Current at Weyburn (2:05 p.m.), Sylvan Lake playing a doubleheader in Regina (2:05 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.) and Lethbridge at Okotoks (4:05 p.m.).
