The Moose Jaw Warriors are into the final month of the Western Hockey League season and will be looking to close a tough campaign out in a positive fashion.

That includes Friday’s contest at Mosaic Place, which will feature the first half of a home-and-home series with the Winnipeg Ice and will be one of three meetings between the two teams over the next 10 days.

The Warriors will be looking for a bit of a better effort in the process after dropping a 7-4 decision to the Regina Pats in the most recent edition of the Trans-Canada clash on Tuesday.

Things looked decent for the Warriors in the early going, as Martin Lang scored on a penalty shot and Carson Sass added his first of the season to give Moose Jaw a 2-1 lead 7:21 into the game.

Ryker Evans would get one back for Regina before the period was out, though, and Logan Nihoff gave the Pats a 3-2 lead with the lone goal of the second period.

It took just over four minutes for the Pats to take control of the game in the third, with Cole Carrier, Zach Smith and Carson Denomie scoring before the period was eight minutes old to put Regina ahead 6-2.

Garrett Wright would get one back for the Warriors 39 seconds after Denomie’s goal – with top prospect Jagger Firkus picking up his first WHL assist on the play – and Tate Popple added a power play marker with 8:40 remaining, but that’s as close as they’d get.

Regina’s Carter Chorney closed out scoring with 4:34 remaining in the game.

Brock Gould got the start in goal and stopped nine of 11 shots but was replaced by Boston Bilous after the Pats’ second goal. Bilous stopped 25 shots the rest of the way.

Spencer Welke had 20 saves for Regina.

The Warriors fell to 14-41-4-0 and sit eight points ahead of last place Swift Current. Regina improved to 21-33-4-0 and are 16 points ahead of the Warriors, but 19 points out of a playoff spot.

Overtime… the Warriors announced Thursday that Saskatoon Blazers goaltender Brett Mirwald had been called up and will spend the remainder of the season with the WHL squad… the 16-year-old prospect had a 2.15 goals against average and .920 save percentage while going 22-7 with the SMAAAHL regular-season champion Blazers, who were upset in the first round of the playoffs by Swift Current… Mirwald was named the SMAAAHL Goaltec Goalie MVP for the 2019-20 season.
