Vanier, Peacock claim junior volleyball titles

Vikings tops in junior boys, Peacock wins in junior girls
The Vanier Vikings and Peacock Toilers senior boys and girls volleyball teams will undoubtedly be hoping the results of the Moose Jaw high school junior city championships are a sign of things to come in their upcoming playoffs.

The Vikings went undefeated in the recent city championship tournament to claim the boys title, while the Toilers battled back from an early loss to claim the trophy in girls’ action.

For the defending champion Vikings, the run to the title was almost anti-climactic, as they rolled to a 2-0 win over Peacock in the semifinal before taking another 2-0 sweep over Central in the gold medal game.

Things were far closer for the Toilers.

Peacock actually dropped their opening match 25-10, 25-16 to Vanier Red before rebounding with a 26-24, 25-21 win over Central. When Vanier White defeated Vanier Red 25-12, 25-22 in the other contest, it was enough to send the Toilers and White into the final.

That contest turned into an epic battle, as Peacock won the first game 25-16 before Vanier rallied for a 23-25 win in game two. The deciding set was more of the same, with Peacock prevailing 15-13 and claiming gold.

The senior volleyball playoffs begin Tuesday with quarter-final action.

In girls play, Cornerstone Christian School (1-7) is at Central (1-7), with game time at 6:20 p.m.

There three boys contests, as second-seed Avonlea (5-4) is at seventh-seed Riverview (0-8) at 7 p.m. before third-seed Central (5-4) hosts sixth-seed Peacock (1-7) and fifth-seed Briercrest Christian Academy is at fourth-seed Cornerstone Christian School (5-4). Both of those games are at 8 p.m.
