Many of us will hit the roads over the next few days as part of holiday celebrations. Of course, travellers should be prepared when hitting the highways.

Before heading out, check the road conditions via The Highway Hotline.

According to SGI, make sure you pack warm clothes (including mitts and headwear), along with candles and matches, a tow rope, and food. If you end up getting stranded, be sure to stay with your vehicle.

Be sure to clear the snow and ice from your car before heading out. Keep headlights on all times so that other motorists can see you, even in low visibility weather.

Drive for the weather conditions. Never use cruise control on icy surfaces.

Finally, be sure you do not drive while distracted or impaired. Police will be looking for impaired drivers. Ensure you have a safe ride or a place to stay if necessary.

More information about winter driving is available on SGI’s website.

Be safe on the roads and have a Merry Christmas!
