Tough start for local rinks in first draw of Moose Jaw SWCT stop

Orsted lone local team to win opener, Ackerman and Robson drop first games of women’s curling tournament.

It wasn’t quite the start teams with local connections were hoping for at the Moose Jaw Sask Women’s Curling Tour stop on Friday night, but thanks to the event’s format, there’s still plenty of time to get back on track at the Moose Jaw Curling Centre.

Regina’s Sherilee Orsted, who includes Moose Jaw’s Candace Newkirk at third, put together a string of steals to take a 7-2 victory over defending national senior women’s champion Sherry Anderson and were the lone local first-draw team to hit the win column.

Orsted -- who has Shalon Fleming at second and Jasmine Kerr at lead -- trailed 2-1 through three ends but went on a run from there, scoring one in the fourth, deuces in the fifth and sixth and another single in the seventh to close things out.

The news wasn’t quite as good for Skylar Ackerman and her rink of third Kya Kennedy, second Taylor Stremick and lead Kaylin Skinner.

Ackerman scored a pair in the first end and added three more in the third to lead 5-1 against Regina’s Chelsey Emberley, but things went awry from there. Emberley went on a steal run of her own with a pair in the fourth and single points in each of the remaining ends to take a 7-5 victory.

Moose Jaw’s Elaine Robson, third Lorraine Arguin, second Haley Spenser and lead Sheri Logan also didn’t have a lot of luck on their side despite a late lead over perennial provincial title contender Mandy Selzer.

Seltzer scored points in three straight ends to lead 4-1 through four, but Robson tied things up with three in the fifth end. Seltzer picked up one in the sixth, but a Robson deuce gave the Moose Jaw rink a 6-5 lead coming home. Seltzer would put the hammer to perfect use, though, scoring three for the 8-6 victory.

Other first draw games saw Jessica Mitchell score a pair in the eighth for a 7-5 win over Brett Barber, Stephanie Thompson score four in the third end on her way to a 9-2 win over Alyssa Resch and Jana Tisdale score four over the final two ends for an 8-4 win over Brooklyn Stevenson.

The late draw featured Penny Barker duelling Resch, Cindy Ricci taking on Stevenson, Robson battling Callan Hamon, Barber against Selzer, Anderson playing Thompson and Tisdale against Emberley. Scores were unavailable for those contests.

Round robin action continues with draws at 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by the quarter-final at 9 a.m., semifinals at 12:30 p.m. nd final at 4 p.m. Sunday. All games are at the Moose Jaw Curling Centre.
