The South Hill Community Association is looking for volunteers to talk trash with their neighbours in Wakamow

Wakamow Valley fall clean-up coming up this weekend

As it does get pretty windy in Saskatchewan, it seems realistic that litter can be a challenge as it spreads throughout Moose Jaw like dandelion seeds in the wind. To that end, the South Hill Community Association (SHCA) will be holding a fall clean-up in Wakamow Park on Sunday, September 26 from 10 am to 12 noon.

Everyone is welcome!

“We have a lot of members who are active on the trails and in the parks and litter is a constant challenge here in our city,” said SHCA president Crystal Froese. “Especially with the pandemic, we have seen more people taking to the trails. We (SHCA) decided a few years back that we wanted to tackle the litter on our side of the city and have been doing it for the last five years.”

Tatawaw Park was cleaned in May with the community coming out to lend a hand for a couple of hours.

“We had so many people. It was fantastic. We were able to do from one end of Tatawaw Park to the other.”

For the fall clean-up, the SHCA contacted the general manager of Wakamow Park, Todd Johnson, to see if they needed some help with the park. He welcomed the group’s community-minded involvement. So, on Sunday the 26th, the SHCA is looking forward to meeting the volunteers across from the Burger Cabin at 10 am. Garbage bags will be provided but you are asked to bring gloves. If you have a garbage picker-grabber of your own, you are welcome to bring that along as well.

The SHCA is encouraging all the other associations to get together sometime soon and do their own neighbourhood in the city.

“This is a great time of year to go through your area and pick up additional garbage and help their neighbours before the snow flies.”

The South Hill Community Association has been out collecting trash in the community for the last five years. If you are interested in helping, they want you to know you don’t have to live on South Hill to participate; they would be happy and would appreciate anyone who wants to volunteer two hours to such a great cause.

“Our community is great this way, when you put a call out for help, people just show up. We welcome everybody!” said Crystal.

So, get the kids out, bring a coffee and come down to the park and have a great time “talking trash” with your neighbours over at the park.
