More than 8,000 Saskatchewan drivers were caught speeding in the month of April, according to SGI.

Throughout the month, law enforcement in Saskatchewan issued 8,081 tickets for speeding and aggressive driving. Of note, this number only includes manually written tickets and not those issued by photo speed enforcement.

Of those drivers caught speeding:

  • 433 exceeded the speed limit in a school zone
  • 341 exceeded 60 km/h while passing a stopped emergency vehicle with lights flashing
  • 247 exceeded the speed limit by more than 35 km/h

A further 46 drivers were caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h. This particular infraction results in an automatic seven-day vehicle seizure.

SGI says that excessive speeding and aggressive driving are among the leading factors in traffic-related deaths and injuries on Saskatchewan’s roads. Therefore, be sure to slow down, take your time, and get to your destination safely.

Police issued tickets for plenty of other traffic infractions during SGI's April Traffic Safety Spotlight, including:

  • 744 distracted driving offences (634 for cellphone use)
  • 281 impaired driving offences (including 258 Criminal Code convictions)
  • 553 offences related to seatbelts/child car seats.

May’s Traffic Safety Spotlight will focus on impaired driving.
