Semifinals set in Moose Jaw high school boys and girls volleyball

Peacock defeats Riverview, Central takes win over Vanier in boys quarter-finals, setting up second round of playoffs Thursday night
The semifinalists are set in the Moose Jaw high school boys and girls volleyball leagues after quarter-final action on Tuesday night.

And you can expect some especially close battles in the boys playdowns after both favourites came away with victories.

The Peacock Toilers (4-6) found themselves in a bit of a close battle but still emerged with a three-game sweep over the Riverview Royals (1-9), taking a 25-16, 25-8, 25-21 win at Peacock.

The other quarter-final saw the defending provincial champion Vanier Vikings (7-3) take a three-game win over the Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars (0-10) with scores of 25-14, 25-9, 25-14.

Now things get really interesting.

Next up for the Toilers will be the undefeated Cornerstone Christian School Falcons (10-0) at Cornerstone on Thursday night. The two teams met on Sept. 30 and Oct. 21, with Cornerstone winning in three games in both matches.

The same can’t be said for the other boys semifinal between Vanier and the Central Cyclones (7-3) at Central.

The Vikings won the first match-up between the two teams back on Sept. 30 in five games, including 15-13 in the final set. The Cyclones got their revenge in the second meeting on Oct. 21, winning in four close games.

Both boys semifinals start at 8 p.m.

The girls semifinals will feature two clear favourites.

The Peacock Toilers (9-0) have dropped a single set in play this season and will host the Vanier Spirits (1-8)  -- the very team that won the third set back on Oct. 19. Peacock took three-game wins in their other two match-ups.

The Central Cyclones (6-3) will host the Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars (2-7) in the other semifinal. With Briercrest only playing five games due to the coronavirus outbreak in Caronport in late September, they’re a bit of an unknown quantity. The two teams met twice on Oct. 19 and Oct. 28, with the Cyclones winning both matches in three games.

Both girls semifinals are at 6:20 p.m.

The winners from the girls semis advance to the city championship game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, with the boys title game taking place on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
