Scotties playoffs set: Wild Card takes on Manitoba in 1-2, Ontario faces Northern Ontario in 3-4

Saskatchewan's Silvernagle closes out even with win over B.C., Team Canada defeats P.E.I. in final contest

The playoff are set at the 2020 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, and two familiar foes will be playing to advance directly to the gold medal game.

Manitoba’s Gimli-based Kerri Einarson will face Wild Card’s Winnipeg-based Jennifer Jones in the Page Playoff 1-2 game at 6 p.m. on Saturday, with the winner to play for the Canadian women’s curling championship on Sunday evening at Mosaic Place.

As a result, the Page 3-4 contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday will feature Ontario’s Rachel Homan and Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville.

Jones and her rink of third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jocelyn Peterman and lead Dawn McEwen had actually clinched their spot earlier the day after taking a 12-7 win over Einarson, ensuring they’d finish at the very least tied for first in the championship pool and having the tiebreaker in their favour.

As it turned out, when Einarson defeated Homan 9-6 and McCarville took an 11-6 win over Jones, it created the very situation that would need that tiebreaker, as Wild Card, Ontario and Manitoba all finished with 9-2 records.

Closing out their Scotties appearance were Canada’s Chelsea Carey, third Sarah Wilkes, second Dana Ferguson and lead Rachel Brown, and they did so in style with a 5-3 win over Prince Edward Island’s Suzanne Birt, third Marie Christianson, second Meaghan Hughes and lead Michelle McQuaid.

Carey and P.E.I. both finished 5-6.

And finally, there the rink the vast majority of the close to 3,000 fans came to see, Saskatchewan’s Robyn Silvernagle.

Silvernagle, third Stefanie Lawton, second Jessie Hunkin and lead Kara Thevenot were out of contention heading into the game against B.C.’s Corryn Brown, but closed out their tournament in style with a 7-6 win. Silvernagle drew the four-foot with her final shot to the roar of the crowd and the North Battleford foursome were given a hero’s send-off, signing autographs for almost half and hour afterwards.

Brown, third Erin Pincott, second Dezaray Hawes and lead Ashley Klymchuk – the youngest team at the tournament – finished at 5-6.
