Provincial U18 boys and girls curling championship underway at Moose Jaw Curling Centre

Heisler opens with win in boys draw, Hogeboom drops first game in girls round robin, action continues through weekend

Dayne Heisler and his Moose Jaw foursome are off to exactly the start they were hoping for at the Curl Sask Provincial U18 Boys Open Championship.

Heisler and his rink of third Blake Montgomery, second Riley Cushway and lead Laine Burnham picked up a 7-4 win over Martensville’s Joel Kitsch during the first boys draw at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

The two teams exchanged points through the first four ends, leading to a 4-4 tie heading into the break. Heisler took advantage of a cluttered front of house in the fifth to pick up a deuce, and after getting a rock completely buried at the back of the four foot early in the sixth picked up a steal for a 6-3 lead.

Heisler was able to hold Kitsh to a single point in the seventh and then finished things off with one of his own in the eighth.

Other boys opening draw scores saw Esterhazy’s Brandon Weiss take a 9-2 win over Lloydminster’s Matthew Reiniger, Avonlea’s Hudson Heistad down Langenburg’s Adin Clarke 12-8 and Swift Current’s Ethan Robinson steal one in the ninth for a 5-4 win over Humboldt’s Eithan Fleischhacker.

Heisler continued his tournament Wednesday night against Mertensville’s Dylan Derksen before facing Heistad at 7 p.m. Thursday and wrapping up the round robin at 12:30 p.m. Friday against Clarke.

Kaylee Hogeboom and her Moose Jaw rink of third Aryn Thibault, second Abby Hogeboom and lead Payton Fisher had a tough run in their opening game of the girls draw as they dropped an 11-5 decision to North Battleford’s Chloe Semeniuk.

Things were close in the early going, with Hogeboom scoring a pair in the third to tie the game 2-2, but a Semeniuk four-spot the next end and steal of two in the fifth gave them control of the game.

Hogeboom got three back in the sixth to make it 8-5, but Semeniuk would reply with one in the seventh and a steal of two in the eighth to finish things off.

Other girls scores in the first draw saw Martensville’s Renee Wood defeat Lloydminster’s Kamdyn Bauldic 8-2, Regina’s Shawna Simpson take a 10-4 win over Saskatoon Nutana’s Olivia Fisher, Swift Current’s Grace Wickenheiser down Glentworth’s Addyson Okraincee 12-4, Martensville’s Melissa Remeshylo defeat Avonlea’s Teagan Miller 10-2 and Estevan’s Heidi Fradette down Regina’s Cory Bjornson 8-7.

Draw 2 saw Wood take a 9-7 win over Miller, Simpson down Bjornson 7-4, Semeniuk score points in five straight ends on their way to a 9-1 win against Fisher and Bauldic steal three in the eighth for a 9-6 win over Wickenheiser.

Hogeboom’s draw continued Wednesday night against Fradette before taking on Bjornson at 9 a.m. and Simpson at 2:30 p.m. Thursday followed by Fisher at 9 a.m. Friday.

The top two teams from each pool advance to the Page playoffs beginning Saturday morning.
