There are 46 classes with more than 28 students in Prairie South School Division (PSSD) this semester, while there are 50 classes with fewer than 10 pupils, a new report says.
Board trustees received a class size report during their March 5 meeting, with data about the number of students in classrooms as of Feb 9.
Large classes
Central Collegiate has 23 classes with more than 28 students this year, which is the most in the division, the data shows.
Some classes with the most students:
- 43 students in Mieux-etre, a French immersion-based Grade 10 Wellness phys-ed program
- 33 students in two Phys-ed 9 courses, one Math 9 course and one Grade 10 Wellness course
- 32 students in two Grade 9 English Language Arts B classes, one Grade 9 health education class and one Grade 10 wellness class
- 31 students in Grade 9 science
- 30 students in Grade 9 science, Grade 9 English Language Arts B, Grade 10 ELA B and Grade 12 biology
The next highest schools are Coronach School and Prince Arthur School, which each have five classes with over 28 pupils, and Avonlea School, which has four classes with more than 28 students.
In particular, Cornerstone Christian School has 38 students in a combined phys-ed 9/Wellness 10 class; Craik School has 32 pupils in a combined phys-ed program; Prince Arthur has 31 students in social studies, science, health, art and phys-ed; Caronport Elementary School has 30 students in Grade 8 homeroom; Coronach has 30 students in History 10; Empire School has 30 kids in a Grade 5/6 split class; and William Grayson has 30 students in a Grade 7/8 split.
Overall, Prairie South has three more classes this semester with more than 28 students compared to the first semester.
Small classes
Bengough, Central Butte, Mankota and Rouleau schools each have six classes with fewer than 10 students, while Kincaid Central and Lafleche Central each have four such classes, the report said.
Central Collegiate, Chaplin, Ecole Gravelbourg, Eyebrow, Mortlach and Rockglen schools each have two classes with under 10 pupils, while Briercrest Christian Academy, Cornerstone Christian, Coronach, Glentworth, Lindale and Mossbank schools each have one class with fewer than 10 students.
In particular, Mankota has three students in a Grade 9/10 split class and four students in Grade 11/12 financial literacy and Grade 11/12 ELA.
Overall, Prairie South has two more classes with under 10 students compared to the first semester.
