The Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) used a conducted energy weapon — also known as a Taser — while responding to a break-in over the weekend.

Police were dispatched to a residence for an ongoing break and enter at 1 a.m. on Sept. 12. An adult male had allegedly smashed out a window with a weapon, gained access, and stole several items. Upon arrival of officers, the man fled and a police K9 unit was called out to track down the accused.

The accused entered a nearby yard, where the homeowner confronted the man. The accused assaulted the homeowner, but by this time police had caught up and located the man. While being arrested, the accused is said to have assaulted three police officers and refused to comply with demands.

An officer discharged a conducted energy weapon (CEW), which was effective and allowed the police to safely take the accused into custody. The man was transported to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police charged Chris Silzer of Moose Jaw with break and enter to commit, three charges of assaulting police officers, uttering threats, assault causing bodily harm and several breaches of court orders.

Silzer has been remanded and will make his first court appearance on Monday, Sept. 13.

Police continue to investigate the situation.
