The Central Cyclones won their first two games at the SHSAA 4A girls provincial volleyball championship on Friday.
The Moose Jaw high school girls volleyball league was a steel-sharpens-steel crucible whenever the Peacock Toilers and Central Cyclones faced off against one another this past season, and now it’s paying dividends.

Both teams are off to perfect starts at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association 4A provincial championships in Moosomin this weekend, with each squad winning their first two games and all but locking down playoff spots.

The Toilers opened the event with a hard-fought victory over Yorkton Sacred Heart, falling 29-31 in the first game but rebounding with 25-16, 25-11 wins. Things were far easier in their second contest, as Peacock rolled to a 25-12, 25-15 win over Melfort.

Peacock faces Meadow Lake (0-2) in their late game Friday before closing out the round robin against North Battleford John Paul II (1-0) Saturday morning.

Central, meanwhile, came out on top in a pair of three-set battles -- the first a 20-25, 25-17, 15-10 victory over Humboldt and second a 18-25, 25-17, 15-10 win against Martensville.

Next up for the Cyclones is Lumsden tonight, followed by Moosomin on Saturday morning.

The top four teams from each round robin pool advance to the playoffs beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with the gold medal game at 5:30 p.m.

You can follow along throughout the event -- including live streams from both gyms -- at www.shsaa.ca.
