Saskatchewan drivers have a problem putting their phones away while driving.

According to SGI, 1,290 tickets were issued during the month of October as part of the Traffic Safety Spotlight.

Of those tickets, 1,148 were for cell phone use while driving, while 142 were for driving without due care and attention.

The previous Traffic Safety Spotlight record for total distracted driving offences in a single month was 1,039.

The results are certainly timely, given the recent announcement that distracted driving penalties will increase as of Feb. 1, 2020.

Other results from October’s Traffic Safety Spotlight include:

  • 324 impaired driving offences (including 283 Criminal Code charges);
  • 6,583 tickets for speeding/aggressive driving offences;
  • 387 tickets related to improper seatbelt or child restraint use.

The focus of this month's Traffic Safety Spotlight is on suspended drivers and uninsured vehicles.
