School zones were the focus of September’s Traffic Safety Spotlight — and Saskatchewan drivers received a failing grade.

According to SGI, last month police across the province issued:

  • 1,424 tickets to drivers for speeding in school zones;
  • 13 tickets to drivers for failing to yield to a pedestrian; and
  • Four tickets for either passing a school bus or failing to stop 5 m from a school bus when safety lights were in operation.

SGI asks drivers to pay attention to posted speed limits and to exercise caution when driving thorugh school zones.

Other results reported by police during September include:

  • 286 impaired driving offences, including 242 Criminal Code charges;
  • 901 distracted driving offences, including 773 tickets related to cellphone use while driving;
  • 515 tickets related to seatbelts, car seats or booster seats; and
  • 6,463 speeding or aggressive driving tickets (separate from the school zone stats).

October’s Traffic Safety Spotlight is on distracted driving, so be sure to put that phone away while you are on the road.
