Northwest Child Development Centre Inc. is one of the recipients of the Government’s allocation of an additional 128 licensed child care centre spaces across the province, announced this morning.

The Moose Jaw daycare will receive 23 new spaces, alongside four other communities. The YMCA in Saskatoon is being given 19 spaces; Eastview Daycare and La Cooperative francaise centre educatif Gard ‘Amis, both in Regina, 30 and three spaces respectively; Vanscoy and District Early Learning Centre in Delisle, 32 spaces; and Elizabeth Place Inc. in Humboldt, 21 spaces.

With this announcement, the total number of new spaces the government has funded since 2007 jumps up to 7,116 — an increase of over 70 per cent in the number of spaces in that time.

Allocation of spaces is decided by the community’s need for child care, and whether it’s organizations are ready to embark on centre development. The funding for these new spaces comes from the Canada-Saskatchewan Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) Agreement, which was signed in March of 2018. The agreement promises to add 2,515 licensed child care spaces by 2020, and 1,300 spaces have already been allocated.

“The Government of Canada is committed to helping families access quality early learning and child care so that more children and parents have the support they need,” said Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness in the press release. “Today’s announcement will make life a little bit easier for more parents across Saskatchewan who want to ensure their children are in good hands.”
