Efforts to promote the “moose war” between Norway and the City of Moose Jaw has netted The Friendly City a national marketing award.

At the recent annual Economic Development Association of Canada (EDAC) conference, the City of Moose Jaw was given the award for best marketing material in the Event category.

Between Jan. 11 — when Regina-based social media stars Justin and Greg challenged Moose Jaw to help Mac the Moose reclaim the title of “World’s Largest Moose Statue” from Stor-Elvdal, Norway — through March 6, there was $6.3 million in international traditional media coverage of Mac the Moose-related media events held by the City of Moose Jaw and Tourism Moose Jaw, according to a municipal news release.

The City of Moose Jaw entered the EDAC awards with a submission called “Mac: The Six Million Dollar Moose” and were given the award on Sept. 22.

“This award truly belongs to our community,” Moose Jaw Mayor Fraser Tolmie said in the news release. “Without our city rallying behind Mac, the rest of the world would not have paid near as much attention. We are proud of the community partnerships that were strengthened throughout the two months of intense — and very fun — media coverage. We can’t wait for Mac to reclaim his title of ‘World’s Largest Moose Statue’ later this fall.”

The City of Moose Jaw was eligible for EDAC’s annual President’s Cup Award, given to the best overall campaign from all category winners. The President’s Cup was awarded at the EDAC conference’s President’s Dinner on Sept. 24 in Edmonton. Mount Pearl, Nfld., won the cup, while Moose Jaw was name one of the top three contenders out of 50 marketing submissions.
