Moose Jaw Ice U12 teams post blowout doubleheader wins

U12 A Ice defeat Saskatoon Hustlers Green 15-5, dominate Lumsden Cubs 25-8; U12 B Ice win 20-3 and 18-9 over Regina Fighting Saints
If how their teams are playing in the youngest division right now is any indication for the future of the Moose Jaw Ice fastball program, things are in good hands, indeed.

The Ice Under-12 A and B teams both completely dominated their opponents in a pair of doubleheaders on Sunday afternoon at Optimist Park, scoring a total of 78 runs over the four games and recording four blowout wins.

For the A Ice, it was business as usual. They improved to 5-1 on the season with a 15-5 victory over the Saskatoon Hustlers Green and 25-8 win over the Lumsden Cubs, while the B Ice rolled to 20-3 and 18-9 victories over the Regina Fighting Saints.

A Ice 15, Hustlers Green 5

The Ice scored the maximum five runs in the first and third innings to build a quick 10-0 lead and never looked back.

Their pitchers, meanwhile, gave Saskatoon little chance to come back: Taryn Friesen got the start and didn’t allow a hit through three innings while striking out the side in each, Aurora Wingenbach was just as effective while striking out six over the next two innings. Sophie Johnstone closed out the contest.

Avery Funke had a solid game at the plate to lead the Ice, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four runs batted in while Friesen was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.

A Ice 25, Lumsden 8

There was only one stat that mattered in the second game of the day for the Ice: walks.

Moose Jaw would draw a total of 35 free passes in the contest, with the top seven of the order walking in every at bat except for three. The Ice would score the maximum five runs in every inning but the second.

Johnstone and Friesen scored four runs each; Chloe Giraudier and Avery Funke had four RBIs each without a single hit. In fact, Moose Jaw would have only two hits in the contest.

Avery Garthus got the start and allowed two runs on four hits and struck out eight, Funke allowed a single run over the next two innings and struck out five. Chloe Strueby closed things out.

B Ice 20, Saints 3

Emily Banchard capped the Ice home opener with a 4-for-4 showing that included four runs scored, four RBI and a home run away from hitting for the cycle.

Kendall Menzies and Leila Olfert crossed the plate three times each, while Aspen Olafson was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
The Ice scored the max five in the first, third and fifth innings, leading 9-3 through two innings and 14-3 through three.

B Ice 18, Saints 9

Things were closer in the second game, as the Saints took advantage of some second-inning control problems to draw eight straight walks, score five runs and take a 7-6 lead out of the second inning.

The two teams were tied 8-8 through three when the Ice finally took over, scoring the max five the final two innings for their nine-run win.

Drew Ansell scored three runs for the ice, while Olafson was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Lily Hardwicke scored a pair of runs and hit a run-scoring double.

Every Ice hitter reached base at least once in the contest.
