Mahamed Bashir Farah made his first appearance in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on July 7 after being charged with attempted murder for an incident on High Street East.

Farah, 34, of no fixed address, appeared in court wearing a white jumpsuit. Legal Aid lawyer Tyne Hagey asked for his matters to be adjourned to Thursday, July 14, so she could acquire the disclosure — or information — against him.

A show-cause — bail — hearing will likely be held sometime after that.

Judge Brian Hendrickson agreed to remand Farah into custody until that date because the Crown was “very opposed” to his release.

The court docket shows Farah is accused of breach of probation, attempted murder, tampering with the serial number on the gun, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes.

According to previous information, the Moose Jaw Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at an apartment building on the 200 block of High Street East on July 5. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a man had been shot and required immediate medical attention. Police were then called to the scene.

Officers arrested Farah at the scene without incident and recovered a firearm. The police service indicated that it did not believe there were other suspects while there was no further risk to the community with the incident.

The lone victim, a 44-year-old male, received serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Moose Jaw Police Service continues to investigate.
