Tristan Johnson-England is maybe not a typical beauty pageant contestant, but the Miss Canada Globe is also not your typical beauty pageant.

Johnson-England is studying at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and also working towards getting her hours to get her journeyman as she learns the auto body trade. The 23-year-old from Moose Jaw is also a Miss Canada Globe 2019 national finalist. The Miss Canada Globe pageant will take place in Toronto in August.

“It’s based not just on your appearance, but also your actual beauty within you – how you are as a person, that you’re kind or generous,” Johnson-England said. “It’s not just how you look and I really like that.”

Three years ago Johnson-England read about the pageant on Facebook and decided to fill out the application. She had an opportunity to take part before this year but didn’t have time due to her schooling.

While she likes the non-traditional aspect of the pageant, Johnson-England is also hoping that by taking part she will force herself to try something new and that she will grow from the experience.

She said that growing up she was “definitely self-conscious and I didn’t feel pretty.”

“Before this competition, I was very much a tomboy,” Johnson-England said. “I wasn’t very confident in myself and it was always boys clothes or baggy clothes. So this is completely out of my comfort zone.”

She said she tends to be shy and hopes undertaking this pageant journey will help her get out of her shell.

“It’s a very good opportunity for people who are a bit shy around people,” she said.

Johnson-England is a volunteer Training Officer with the Moose Jaw #33 Navy League Corps. She will complete her program at Sask. Polytech at the end of April and is looking forward to having more free time to dedicate to volunteering and getting out in the community more.

Miss Canada Globe does have many of the same staples as a stereotypical beauty pageant with evening wear and a swimsuit, but there is also a talent competition and the competitors have to make their own costume for one portion of the contest.

“They want people to be themselves,” she said.

Johnson-England has played the piano for 11 years and has her Grade 3 from the Royal Conservatory. She is also considering singing – or combining the two – and failing that she can also bring a dinged-up car on stage and make it look like new.

“I’m not too sure how they feel about me doing auto body. I’m not sure if that’s allowed,” Johnson-England said with a laugh. “I think it’s a good talent and I’m sure a lot of other people would think it’s cool, but I’m not sure on the policy on that.”

Since she is just finishing school, Johnston-England is reaching out to the community for support.

“I’m currently looking for sponsors for this as well as pledges, but I’m also looking for possible donations of make-up, hair supplies and new clothing to be more girly,” she said.
