High school football, soccer set to kick off new seasons

Full slate of games in football, boys and girls soccer set for Saturday throughout Moose Jaw
With the start of the new school year on Tuesday, the Moose Jaw high school sports schedule also kicks into high gear.

The opening week is filled with final practices and preparations before things kick off on Friday afternoon, when the Moose Jaw High School Football League defending champion Yorkton Raiders host the Vanier Vikings in their annual ‘Friday Night Lights’ contest at 7 p.m.

The football season kicks off in earnest Saturday with the Central Cyclones traveling west to take on the Swift Current Colts for a 1 p.m. contest, followed by the Estevan Elecs hosting the Peacock Tornadoes at 2 p.m.

On the local front, the boys and girls soccer leagues also kick into high gear, with a full slate of games running all day Saturday. All boys contests are at the VLA fields, with all girls games taking place at Sunningdale.

The season opens at 10:30 a.m., with the Central Cyclones and Peacock Tornadoes facing off in both boys and girls action. Games continue at 2:45 p.m., with the boys seeing the defending champion Cyclones taking on Vanier and girls featuring Peacock against the Vikings.

There will also be a pair of doubleheaders in Swift Current as the Colts face the Weyburn Eagles in both boys and girls action.

The annual Soccerfest early-season tournament is slated for the weekend of Sept. 13-14.
