High school basketball conference playdowns underway

March Madness hits SHSAA as teams begin quest for Hoopla

Moose Jaw and area high school basketball teams will be looking to take their first steps to the Hoopla provincial championship tournament during conference playdowns this weekend.

The Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars will host a four-team 3A boys conference tournament at Margaret P. Reimer gymnasium in Caronport, featuring Assiniboia taking on Outlook in the opening game Friday and the winner advancing to face Clavet on Saturday morning for the right to advance to regionals.

The Cougars get into the action at 12:45 p.m. Saturday when they take on Cornerstone Christian School, with the winner advancing to the final at 4:45 p.m. and also earning a regional berth.
The top two teams from each conference playdown advance to regionals during the Mar. 13 weekend.

At the 2A girls conference tournament in Radville, the top-seeded hosts from Cornerstone will face Radville for the right to advance to regionals on Saturday morning, with the winner of Redvers or Rocanville also moving on to the conference title game.

The defending 3A girls provincial champions from Briercrest Christian travel to Maple Creek to begin defence of their title and are the number one seed. They’ll take on the winner of Kindersley and Maple Creek on Saturday morning for a regional spot.

The other side of the draw will feature a familiar foe in the Assiniboia Rockets, with the fellow Moose Jaw league competitors holding down the second seed. They’ll take on the winner of Outlook and Rosetown in their semifinal.

The Moose Jaw high school league finals – featuring the 4A Central Cyclones and Peacock Toilers in both the boys and girls gold medal games – are set for Tuesday at 6:20 p.m. for girls and 8 p.m. for boys at Sask Polytech, with local squads expected to host regionals the following weekend.
