The Cornerstone Christian School Falcons won their conference championship and are back in action for regionals this weekend at home.

The Cornerstone Christian School Falcons are only two wins away from making an appearance in the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association 2A girls provincial basketball championships.

And they’ll have a chance to go for those wins on their home court this coming weekend.

The Falcons are among four Moose Jaw teams hosting regional playdowns this Friday and Saturday, with a rather unique caveat this season -- due to the pandemic, the traditional championship extravaganza known as Hoopla won’t be taking place, and as a result individual provincials will be hosted all over the province.

Cornerstone needed a single win to book their regional berth this past weekend, as they rolled to a 57-42 victory over Rocanville.

Ashley Breitkreuz led the Falcons with 15 points while Kenzie Behrns added 14 and Erica Kaminski 12.

The win earned Cornerstone the 2A girls' third seed heading into regionals, and as a result, they’ll act as hosts for their four-team tournament beginning Friday. The Falcons kick off their quest at 6 p.m. against Eatonia, with Davidson taking on Macklin in the other semifinal. The regional final is 1 p.m. Saturday at Cornerstone.

The remaining regionals will all take place in the 4A division, and if everything goes according to plan, there’s a good chance Moose Jaw could be hosting a provincial championship next weekend.

The Central Cyclones and Peacock Toilers are ranked one and two respectively in the 4A boys division and will each be hosting regional playdowns.

The Cyclones will take on 16-seed Regina Scott in their opening match Friday at 6:15 p.m. at Central, with Martensville battling Saskatoon Bedford Road in the other semifinal. The regional final is set for 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Central.

The Toilers open against 15-seed Melville at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by Regina Johnson against Saskatoon E.D. Feehan at 8 p.m. Their regional final is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Peacock.

The fifth-seeded Vanier Vikings travel to North Battleford for their regional playdown.

Central will also be hosting a 4A girls regional, with the fourth-seeded Cyclones taking on 13-seed Saskatoon Marion Graham at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Fifth-seed North Battleford John Paul II faces 12-seed Martensville at 2:45 p.m.; the regional final is 1:30 p.m. at Central on Saturday.

The sixth-seed Vanier Spirits are in Meadow Lake for their regional, with eighth-seed Peacock travelling to Regina Harvest City.

Also on the road for regionals this weekend are 3A girls 15-seed Riverview, who make the trip to Unity, while 11-seed Briercrest Christian Academy is in St. Walburg.
