For the second straight month, the number of distracted driving offences in Saskatchewan decreased.
According to SGI, police reported 534 distracted driving offences in the moth of December. That number includes 408 tickets for cell phone use. While that total is still high, it represents the lowest monthly total in 2019. By comparison, for the majority of 2019, the average monthly distracted driving tickets issued was 900.
An all-time high of 1,290 tickets were issued in October.
Distracted driving fines will increase as of Feb. 1.
The focus of December’s Traffic Safety Spotlight, however, was on impaired driving. Police reported 295 impaired driving offences, including 249 Criminal Code charges, during December.
Impaired driving remains the leading cause of death on Saskatchewan roads.
Police also reported the following offences during December:
- 4,722 tickets for speeding/aggressive driving;
- 309 tickets for improper seatbelt or child restraint use.
