Moose Jaw Families for Change is happy to be commemorating their 15th anniversary on Aug. 23, with a come-and-go barbeque at the Kinsmen Inclusion Centre.
The MJFFC began thanks to the vision of three families — the Scidmore family, the Sapp family, and the Hammer family — who saw a need for more opportunities for their adult children with disabilities.
In pursuing their personal needs, they opened the first group home with the help of fundraising and the support of Telemiracle.
From there, the Families for Change agency expanded to include more than the initial group home they envisioned. Now, MJFFC is proud to include three groups homes as well as the Kinsmen Inclusion Centre and all of its programming, and their Supported Independent Living Program (SILP).
Even after 15 years, the MJFFC continues to embody the vision that formed the organization.
“Without the families' initiative to build the agency, we definitely wouldn't be where we are today,” said Katie Statler, community coordinator for MJFFC. “We have certainly tried to carry out their mission and their legacy by continuing to provide supports in the community for people with varying abilities.”
And so, because it’s such a momentous occasion, the MJFFC is inviting everyone in the community to stop in between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at their celebration barbeque. The event is free of charge, and will have a welcoming atmosphere.
“We're welcoming anyone to join us for the celebration, whether you're familiar with Moose Jaw Families for Change or not,” said Statler, who also noted that there are some exciting announcements in the future for the MJFFC.
