An interesting situation seeing a local landlord who rents a trailer pad to a home deemed to fall under the Property and Nuisance Bylaw received much discussion during the meeting of Executive Committee last night.

The landowner – represented by his lawyer – said he has been requested by the city to repair the property, with the landowner seeking to have the repairs made by the trailer owner. The situation came out of the landlord going to the city with a complaint and then having a city issue their Order to Comply to the landlord.

The landlord argued that there is no legal basis for him to make repairs to the home and that the trailer owner was simply trying to use the bylaw as a weapon to keep from having to make repairs herself.

The homeowner addressed council, pointing out that massive water damage to the property from an ongoing water leak in the area had not only destroyed the land itself, but also caused heavy damage to the trailer due to constant shifting and settling, and therefore the issue was one that should be dealt with by the landlord.

The issue was referred to in-camera discussions.
